Rover V8 Timing

Hi All,
Need help to get her started
Took the distributor off to paint it and painted over the marks I made. I know stupid. I have to reset the timing is there a simple way to do it. The distributor feed is connected to an electronic box with the coil piggy back style. No comments about the position{-} Any help would be appreciated. It's a new build, Ak, ready to put the tub on.
Many thanks
Huge.

Turn the crank so the pointer is about 8 degrees BTDC then fit the dizzy so that the rotor points to the terminal in the cap that goes to No 1 Cylinder (front passenger side). If you've got fuel and sparks it should fire-up.Then you can time it proply with a gun, anywhere between 21 and 30 advance at 3000 revs with vacuum pipe off(and sealed)

RE: Rover V8 Timing

You need to reset the static timing.
Forget about the coil etc- that sounds bog standard SD1.
Key question is, what sort of distributor have you?
If it is also bog standard ie lucas electronic, the method is all explained on page 68 0f Haynes manual- including a picture showing the relationship of the timing rotor and the magnetic pick up.
Email me your address and I'll send you a photocopy
Cheers
David
