| Jag driveshaft cover thingies Can I ask a simple question, and hope for a simple answer. The driveshaft cover thingies, with 4 rivets, 2 halves and a jubilee clip. Should I have 4, like the original XJ6, or just the two on the hub ends. Is it just personal preference whether to fit them, like the 'stone/splash guards' on the front hubs, and are the inner and outer ones exactly the same (i have 4 outer ones) And since i've been particularly bored of late i've been test assembling my bits to see what nuts, split pins, etc i'm still missing, so, first progress pic attached. http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/4201.jpg There ain't no replacement for displacement.. GD427 on order Cost to date: £1090.62, Progress to date: Big pile of assorted jag bits in garage and THE diff.

| RE: Jag driveshaft cover thingies Hi, Sorry I cant help with your question but that looks like a really neat job youve done on the axle, may I ask how the experience has been? Ive thought about trying to redo my own axles as the cost is far happier than getting Wards to do it but then theres all the specialist tools needed and preloads, end floats. Whats your advice? Cheers Andy Study filling up with bits, wife not so amused! http://images.animfactory.com/animat...lls_md_wht.gif

| RE: Jag driveshaft cover thingies I dont know about special tools. I've had to buy a couple of big sockets, and i buggered my spring compressor removing the front springs, other than that it's been plain sailing, if hard and messy work. Cost wise its worked out cheaper that buying a complete pair of axles from Ward. I've attached the spreadsheet of costs that shows everything i've bought. http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/4202.txt (It claims to be a TXT but its an Excel XLS file - Right click, save as .XLS) There ain't no replacement for displacement.. | RE: Jag driveshaft cover thingies Um, thanks, now youve got me interested. What books/reference did you use and were they good enough to do the rebuild? was the diff reconed by yourself or someone else. thanks! Sorry for all the questions, its always been a get someone else to do it job that I might now tackle! | RE: Jag driveshaft cover thingies Andy, All of the bearings, bushes, balljoints etc are easy to fit. The solid metal bits just need cleaning, paint/coating and reassembling. The diff appears pretty solid. No obvious play in the input/output shafts. No chaff, swarf or lumps in the oil, so i just cleaned it up and bolted the cover back on. I may need to revisit it later, but I may not, so we'll have to wait and see... The calipers were the biggest git, as to clean them up you have to seperate the halves, and the seals kit doesn't come with the o rings to refit them. Personally i'd say do it yourself, so you can honestly claim to have done the whole job yourself, and if you've taken it all apart, you'll be more familiar with the bits when time comes to put it back together.. Book / reference, i've got a PDF file of all the Jag bits from Ward, which is brilliant, and a photocopy of the relevant chapters of the Jag Haynes manual from my library. | RE: Jag driveshaft cover thingies Mike, If i 'chuck em', when I take it off-roading, whats to stop trees, rocks etc making their way into my CV joints and knackering them?
