Fire extinguisher and Insurance
Hi,
with all the recent talk about fire extinguishers, just wondering if anyone knew what would happen if you had a fire and you put it out, would the insurance company still pay for repairs? The reason I ask, a mate had an electrical fire in a 3 year old Renualt and he put it out and the insurance didnt pay as it hadnt burnt to a crisp. He was fully comp but they still woundnt pay. I would guess with a fibreglass car it would do a lot of damage, Phil

RE: Fire extinguisher and Insurance
insurance companies will not pay for the cause of the fire, they will only pay for the damage resulting from the fire,so you would be better off letting it burn completely.

RE: Fire extinguisher and Insurance
Russ,
I had a feeling that would be the case, would only use my extinguisher if travelling at speed and it caught alight, would then give me time to stop and get out with a bit of luck, then allow it to burn to a crisp, Phil

RE: Fire extinguisher and Insurance
I have personal experience of this. A sticking needle valve in a Holley carb on my car caused the fuel to spill out of the overflow tubes (which in a Holley carb vents to atmosphere not back down the carb throat) and found its way onto the stainless exhaust manifolds which easily reach petrol vapour igniting temperature. Anyway, I managed to stop and put the fire out under the bonnet which basically wrecked everything that wasn't metal (except the body). My insurance company agreed to cover the complete cost of the parts as I stated that I wanted to do the repairs myself. They were as good as gold about it and paid up straight away.
Morale of the story is to fit the Holley with the marine version of the vent tubes which interestingly bend over and point down the throat or even better buy an Edelbrock {-} {-} {-} Rob :tu
