Going nuts

Dax cobra approx 7 yrs old ,factory supplied hallibrands-still have reciept. But nuts around the split rims corroded, try as I may I cannot find replacements(they are not image) They are splined head -7mm dia- length from under the head is 32mm of which approx 1/2 is threaded, held on at the back with a standard nut.
I have had it suggested that very few people make/supply 7mm bolts and it would be ok to use 6mm -sounds a bit gash to me- can anyone help?
Thanks Ian.

RE: Going nuts

Ian - before going to 6mm items, two things you could try:

1/ Ask Image if they can help - what size do they use??
2/ Go to a couple of local fastener specialists to see what they can scare up. Take a sample with you. Have a look in yellow pages, there's usually one of these outfits on most industrial estates somewhere.

Whatever you do, make sure your new fasteners are proper high-tensile items. Oh - and the nuts at the back should be self locking type - nylock or similar.
Luck

Wilf

RE: Going nuts

Hi there when you say they are splined head do you mean socket head ???
silly question are you sure they are metric ??
instead of going down to 6mm you could go to 1/4 UNF so that you are only 25 thou undersize instead of approx 40 thou under your other alternative would be to try for a 9/32 UNF but these willl probably be as hard to get hold as 7mm.
One last thought R.S components do quite a varied range of specials.
cheers
Paul

RE: Going nuts

I replaced mine on the last set I had with Stainless Steel items. They were identicle in size to the originals. I got them from Bradford Bolt and Nut Company 01274 662222. When I got them Stainless had seen a slump, I think they might add up to a price now.
Regards.
Mike.

RE: Going nuts

RS components have their own on line catalogue @ rswww.com

Another company who do nuts & bolts etc is Namrick, just type it into your search engine and it will come up with web site.

Hope this helps.

RE: Going nuts

Hi Ian,

I had the same problem with my wheels, bought around the same time. They are compomotove and are indeed fitted with 7m bolts as described. These are not a standard bolt and are High Tensile. Your easiest option would be to have the heads blasted with a fine grit or bead and them paint them. You will find it almost immpossible to get replacements except from compomotive. I have bought spares from them and they are very good (if a tad expensive). I would not personally go for any other sized bolt as the choice made by the manufacturer will be based on a well calculated figures, not least of which will be load speading and tensile strength both attributes peculiar to these specific bolts.

Hope this helps.

All the best
