Cooling

Gentlemen !
Any suggestions in choosing a radiator for Chevy 350 engine w. iron heads (cr.approx 10.2:1)in a replica? The body is an exact copy of 427SC.
I suppose the rad has to be modified to fit, but whitch radiator should be used for starters?

RE: Cooling

Hi RTM and welcome aboard.
You say that the body is an exact replica,is the chassis also a (round tube)replica? If so you should contact Crendon or find someone called wilf leek on this forum and send him a message(you can find him by looking under "profiles")that is if he doesn't reply to this thread first.
Some people use a Rover SD1 rad and then get it modded so that it has more cores,or you could contact any one of the UK Cobra replica manufacturers.
Pilgrim use a Sierra 2.3 diesel rad but this 10.5:1 CR may need something bigger.

RE: Cooling

In my Crendon I use a 3 row (vitesse) SD1 rad, with two 13" puller fans. Never, ever, had a water temp problem even with 408ci of rampaging Ford being thrashed to death on hot track days. I happen to use a header tank on my engine - a lot of folk do without, but I believe that using one can eliminate a lot of cooling problems such as airlocks. I take no special precautions when filling her up, just pour it into the header tank. Also I ran the vent line from the rad into that there tank - works a treat.

RE: Cooling

Hi RTM

I have just purchased (It came just before Christmas) a three row SD type radiator for my AK/Chevy small block.

This is the one which AK recommend but whether it would fit your chassis would have to be checked. It was supplied by Grantham Radiators - 01 476 561 975 and cost £125 plus carriage and VAT.

Hope that helps

Cheers John

RE: Cooling

Thanks Guys,
I suppose I´ll opt for a Vitesse 3row. When ign. and cam timing is OK, there should not be any problems with cooling and ping, even with higer CR.
Need to do some experiments on engine power / caracter and driveability anyway, just for interest.
Can anybody give estimations on dragstrip performance w. Chevy SB / 5 speed.
The power at rear wheels should be about 380- 400 at ca 6000 -6500 rpm, and the chassis tuned for traction. I am especially interested in 60 ft. ETs.

RE: Cooling

I run a GD with a Serck Racing 4 row ally rad, which you can just about see in the robs blower section of the gallery.

I have had no problems with cooling running 500+ in stop start M1 traffic on a Friday.

Which Cob are you putting this in?

Best Regards

Robert

RE: Cooling

I too have purchased this radiator from Grantham radiators and it looks like a nice piece of Kit. With a decent pipe run and fan it should be able to handle your sb.

If you go to collect you may even get a discount for some of the folding stuff....I paid £125 straight........

Now how do I get it to mate with the four Citroen 2CV engines I've welded together..... damn arent they aircooled !!

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Cooling

Is it true that you can put a standard rover Sd1 rad in if you are powered by a ford cos it produces about the same hp as an SD1
