    Insurance for cars in storage?

    Hi All

If I wanted to take my Dax off the road and put it in storage for a while can I insure it under a no drive policy?
I really don't want to sell the car but then I never use the thing so it's costing me insurance and tax every year and I'll be lucky if I cover 100 miles in it this year. Just seems a waste of money so thought about storing it for a while but would like to keep it insured for fire and theft only and of course, no driving.

Anyone stored a car before and managed to insure it?

    Cheers

    Craig.

Dax Tojeiro, + 355 Chevy + Tremec box = In storage and possibly for sale, make an offer...
DB Hardtop still in the garage.
Polishes to date = On hold.

    Hi Craig,

Most of the specialist classic car insurers will offer a "Laid-up" insurance policy. Try your current insurers.

Cheers Clive, Thought it would be harder than that! Not too dissimilar to build insurance I guess. I'll have a ring round when my current policy expires and see what is out there.
I guess there is no problem with the government either so long as the car is SORN'd and not taxed.

    Cheers

Just wondered why you don't drive your car much? Not having a go but is it because it is such a top build and polished within an inch of its life you don't want to get it dirty? Just wondered if this is the case what will change in the future?

I have never done less than 2000 miles a year in mine although I am the first to admit it is nothing like a concourse car now with lots of stone chips and a couple of scratches but then again driving it is what I always intended to do to it.

Not afraid to use it, Just don't get the time.

I don't live where the car is kept now as I have my own house but without a garage so the car is kept at my parents house. This kind of rules out taking it to work in the morning when the sun is out as I would have to drive 30 minutes to get to the car then drive to work as well.

I find my weekends are all taken up with other things like work on the house, work on my daily driver, seeing my parents, friends Etc.

I'm not one for just going out for a drive either for no real reason so it simply doesn't get used. Maybe I need to consider selling it on but I live in the hope that one day I'll get a garage or another house with a garage then when it's only a few feet away from where I live, I'll be more tempted to take it out when I can.

Nah, Didn't think you were having a go and I expected someone to ask why.

It's a tough decision but I think for me the main enjoyment was in building the car, Driving it now is fun but as an engineer I need a project to keep me busy. At the moment I'm rebuilding my house by cleaning and spraying a steel spiral stair case, Little restoration project right there, then I have a kitchen to refit as and decorate the rest of the place.
If I got another house sometime with a garage I'd probably get the building itch again and want to screw together a Daytona replica with as many "Original" looking features on it as I could.

I'll keep the Dax for a while yet though as I may well change my mind in the future unless anyone wants to make me a really good offer.....

    Cheers

I think you'll find Craig, that the difference in cost from full insurance to laid up insurance to be approx £100. Add on the tax saving and that's just over £300 saving per year or approx £6 per week. Only you can decide which is more important to you, the ability for an exciting drive if/when you get time or £6 in your pocket each week? Just my 2p worth

Or you could put your undoubted engineering skills to good use and build a secure garage at your house then you'd get to use the car.
