Being In Wrong Place At The Wrong Time.........

Hi all
Would like to say "always expect the unexpected..............." I was driving in my GD on Sunday morning and following at distance, at a low speed possible below 40mph, an Audi A6 which suddenly pulled up dead in the road, with out brake lights and any without warning. There was nothing in front of this guy and before I knew what was happening I had hit him. At that moment I remembered the artic behind me, looking my rear view mirror I helplessly watched the artic veering to miss us, leaving tyre marks as he went, so it could of been alot worse.... I could not believe what had happened....... It turn out the guy driving the Audi, had it on a test drive and had picked up 15/20 mins earlier. He said that he had switched it from auto to manual(Tiptronic) when the car locked up and came to a halt. He knew I was behind him but said he could do nothing to get out of the way..... I have happen to ring someone today by chance and they had a similar incident in a Audi A6 when he was going into a roundabout and went by accident to change down manually when it was in auto and it locked up and stall, luckly nobody was behind him. I have attached photo of my poor GD. I would appreiate if any body else have heard anything about these tiptronic gearboxes doing this.
Regards
One Sad Colin( So will miss my Cadwell Trackday on Friday)

Ouch

I guess you're fine, but what a shame about the car. Going to be a while before Andy can make you a new shell, so you can kiss goodbye to the summer...

Since someones already brought up Caveat Emptor, perhaps there should be a Caveat Audi...

Hard luck Colin, hope you can get the car sorted soon. Shame about the damage and missing Cadwell, but at least you're ok.

Sorry to miss you at Cadwell was hoping to see what one of these LS6 engines go like. Hope the damage is not too bad and you manage to get it back on the road ASAP.

Re: Being In Wrong Place At The Wrong Time.........

Very sorry to hear about your "accident"
With regard to the Audi, I've owned and driven hundreds of thousands of miles in Audis of all kinds including my previous RS6 and my current RS4 and I've not heard of any such problems with the auto/tiptronic 'boxes.
I suspect that the problem is more likely to be user error and the driver inadvertantly changed from "Drive" into "Park".
In Tiptronic mode, the gearlever has to be on the right-hand side of the gate to change up and down manually. The left side of the gate contains the usual auto modes i.e. Park, Drive, Reverse, 2, 3, etc.
Good luck with getting your car repaired soon.
Cheers
Paul

Re: Being In Wrong Place At The Wrong Time.........

I know the body looks a mess, but if the chassis and engine aren't too damaged, couldn't you patch it up with a load of GRP matting? It would look gash, but I'm sure you could get it strong enough for Cadwell...

... optimistic?

Really sorry to hear of your GD's attempt to mate with an Audi. What timing with Cadwell, only a couple of days away. I was really looking forward to seeing your LS6. Still there will be another time & I'm glad that you're unscathed. Looks like Andy's going to be busy again

Colin

what can anyone say ...... I'm just glad you're OK.

It sounds like he shoved into park, but I know with my tiptronic beemer you can't put it in park unless your foot is on the brakes - so if you saw no brake lights he could not have done that.

It sounds like a fault the insurers may be interested in
