Re: How old are cobra builders?!

You may well be. I thought i would be at the younger end of the scale at 33, but apparently not.

As i recall, i had no money at 24, insurance companies laughed and hung up on me, and i would probably have killed myself with 400hp.

I'm now at the stage where i (and my other half) are old enough to earn big bucks, have no children to make it disappear, and are still young enough to enjoy it.

Can't bloody wait. Engine delivery T-Minus 9 (working) days and counting

Re: How old are cobra builders?!

Hmm.. yeah not all 24yr olds are like that...

Instead of spending my hard earned cash on a 300yr old 1.1L Fiesta and buying pointless bodykits, exhausts (which still sound like the car is farting), and some crappy induction kit to make it go 3mph faster... Im spending my money on something worthy!

As Jeremy Clarkson once said... "if you want a fast car, start with one in the first place"

So here is how I can afford it... Im making it with my brother... we have estimated it to cost between 15k and 18k... Depending on engine, shiny stuff, etc, etc...
That's 9k each... Its going to take us 18months to build (cos I've only got time at weekends - And he's too scared with engineering type stuff to do it without me!)

So that's £500 a month to save... We are doing well so far... (total £5236 in the bank saved so far...) The rolling chassis is purchased... By the time we've built that, the money should be adding up for the next stage...

And Insurance? in 18mths time, ill be 25... Maybe for the first year Ill insure it for 6mths on limited milage insurance = £400 - £500 a year... Also possible...

With regards to bhp... I already drive a Golf R32... and I have passed my advanced driving course. I have driven a Lotus Esprit V8 (3.5l i think) a few times and can handle that fine so I'm not too scared...

I guess there will be people reading this and saying what a Nieve little idiot, etc, etc...
Well that's fine... A friend of mine has just bought a Honda type R = £12,000!! Im spending less and getting a MUCH NICER CAR! (Ok so I've got to wait - but not many people can say they built their car!)

Re: How old are cobra builders?!

How the hell did you get insurance ?!!!

At 29, with 12 years claim and accident free driving, a full no claims bonus, only one insurance company would touch me on my Esprit, and that was only the 2.2 flat 4, and that was only under duress, as i was going to turn 30 after a couple of months.

At 19 i was driving a 1.3 Spitfire, and the insurance on that was pretty hideous at the time, up to around £550 TPF&T, which was a lot in 1990!!

Re: How old are cobra builders?!

Oh my god -have moved up another age category since the poll was last done a while back. Getting a bit too close to the 'Saga' age band now.

Re: How old are cobra builders?!

Yes Richard,

But you were younger when you built the car so the extra years don't count
