Crate motors

What is everyones experience with crate motors?
I'm talking about complete, out of the box, fitted with gearbox and everything needed to run.
Anyone any experience with new LS6's?
Thanks

Simon

Re: Crate motors

Mostly they are a compromise for popularity unless you can specify. If I were you enjoy choosing the parts to define the characteristics you want.

By the way, Brian at Repower has just received my 415 chevy mowtown short motor from the states. If anybody is interested, he ordered two, so one is for sale I think. If you are interested contact him as they are on 3 months order. Its a small block that can be taken to over 427 if you want, also no problems with overheating like the 400,s experienced. Thick walled block, forged crank etc etc.

In reasonably mild form 470 HP with bags of torque. Up the cam and mid 500,s is there if you want.

Best of luck.
Mike.

Re: Crate motors

Simon,

You need to do some research on this. The ls6 has a transaxle. So if you buy an ls6 you need to source a T56 camaro gearbox or buy a camaro ls1 with it's box and uprate it. You could use a 3550 with adapted bell housing on an ls6. I've heard the downshift isn't good with these but don't know as a matter of personal experience. You also need to know if the vette alternator will clear your bodywork and if the winged pan will clear also. It's possible to exceed 400 hp with minor changes to a stock engine, ie a cam change and aftermarket oil pump. I've just had a basic engine dynoed at 381 hp/385 ft/lbs and 305 of that was at 2100 rpm. It's even got ordinary heads on it. The engine runs on mbe management.

As for ls6 crate motors, I don't think they are quite complete.

GD are actively importing crate LS6 engines and have installed into a number of customer cars. Might be worth a call.

" The ls6 has a transaxle."

A transaxle? you mean as in GT40/Ultima type transaxle? with the drive coming directly to the wheels from the gearbox?

Re: Crate motors

The Zo6 has a torque tube behind the clutch which houses the propshaft. That mates to the diff and gearbox fitted at the back of the car which is irs. The box is an MM12 or something like that, think it's a ZF box. I'm not sure but it's probably no good to you.

You need to pick your engine package and then order an LS1 T56, not an earlier T56. Then you need the concentric slave cylinder to suit and either an ls1 vette or ls1 camaro clutch & flywheel package. Then you're cooking The ls1 t56 has a longer input shaft as well as the concentric slave cylinder. If you need the stick 3" further forward then you can use viper parts and have the benefit of a thicker output shaft as well

If you don't want the cast of the t56 then look at the t3550, it's cheaper and lighter. It will fit by welding an adaptor plate onto the rear of the ls1 bellhousing.

Re: Crate motors

GD are selling a crate LS6 now, and a stand alone loom and ECU mapped for it.

They also sell a complete gearbox package to suit, including adaptor plates, flywheel etc to fit

Re: Crate motors

Works out at over £10,500 if you buy their gearbox... guaranteed to work though...

Re: Crate motors

Robin
Does that include absolutely everything including the fancy new ECU, new tank etc etc?
Also what are you planning to get power wise from your LS1 unit?
