Dremel or copy?

I've decided that after months of doing without, I need a Dremel type tool.
Are the real things worth the money or has anyone had perfectly good use out of a cheaper alternative? You can buy about 6 kits from Woolworths for the same price as a real Dremel...

Re: Dremel or copy?

I have had my Dremel for some time now and bought it to replace one I bought from elsewhere, some dodgy make.

The Dremel has lasted far longer, and it does get a bit of abuse.

Re: Dremel or copy?

I've got the Woolworths kit, was about £30, It's given me good service It's worth buying a dremel drum sander attachment though, excellent for fine fetteling holes in fibreglass etc

Cheers

Re: Dremel or copy?

I got a B&Q (PP brand) cheapie as they were on clearance at the time (£10 for the tool and a selection of accessories in a case).
It's not bad, variable speed etc, but it does run hot
Fettling holes etc on the GD has more-or-less worn it out, but at that price I can't complain.

I originally got it for drilling 0.8 to 1.5mm holes in home-etched circuit boards, but since the bench drill will grip a 0.8mm drill bit, I use that instead. More accurate.

Simon.

Re: Dremel or copy?

Robin,

Hope you spot this in the next 14 hours!

Only been used 'a couple' of times, looks to be a bargain?

Re: Dremel or copy?

I have a cheapy from Focus Do it All, cost £20 and I have been abusing it for 3 years now, made by Champion, I know its a crappy make but it still works. If you pay for the real thing you get the quality, depends how often your going to use it.

Re: Dremel or copy?

Machinemart have an interesting kit for about 30 quid that comes with a long flexible tube and a stand so you don't have to manoeuvre the whole drill about...

Re: Dremel or copy?

I agree that the dremmel is one handy little bugger of a tool, but wouldn't you just love one with a proper chuck on it???

Re: Dremel or copy?

Have bought the Machinemart one - seems like a useful bit of kit. The flexible drive is certainly handy...
