Fuel Filler & SVA

Can anyone tell me whether it is a requirement of the SVA to have a restriction in the fuel filler which only allows the use of unleaded fuel. Dunno where I got this idea from but it's now bugging me. Help please.

Re: Fuel Filler & SVA

You only need the restriction if you are subject to a catalyst emissions test.

So that's if your engine is post '92 or post '95, depending on what it came out of.

Section 15.2, part 1b in the Blurb.

Simon.

Re: Fuel Filler & SVA

Hi Robin, Simon is right regards the book!

But I was advised to fit one by Friendly MOT garage.

2 reasons - 1. The Inspector MAY say you have not controlled the grade of petrol that can be put into the car- therefore emmissions will alter ( remember we are at the mercy of 'their' interpretation' of the regulations - and it only costs a tenner!

2. - If your missus sneaks out in the Cob, and she tops up the petrol to hide it's use - SHE will at least put the correct grade in !!!

Hi Mike, I've got a nice SVA friendly lockable Aero cap for sale if you're interested?
Like brand new with all the fittings.
£40 for a quick sale over £70 in Europa.

Kev, I do like the sound of 'lockable' , If you still have it, and I can make the run next week, bring it along and I will have a look.

Re: Fuel Filler & SVA

The pilgrim tank has an "anti-syphon" baffle fitted but the locking cap will stop anyone adding things to your petrol. ie sugar etc

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I only have 1 & 1/4 inch gap between the top of the filler neck and the body. I had a lovely aero cap (locking) but the integral funnel was too long to fit. The unleaded restrictor fits in the bottom of the funnel.

I say "had" because I've chopped it down and it now fits a treat - still locks etc but there's no easy way I can fit the restrictor as things stand.

Reagarding the missus driving the car - mm interesting thought but she knows the death penalty applies to offences like that!

Re: Fuel Filler & SVA

Robin,
If your car doesn't need a Cat, you don't need a restrictor insert.

It's there in black and white in the SVA manual, and it's not open to interpretation.
However it's sort of hidden in the "Design & Construction" section, not the "Emissions (P)" section.

Any vehicle with an "emissions effective date" pre '92 does not NEED to have a Cat, though some (Volvo etc) did.

Some models up to '95 don't need a Cat either.

You can therefore legally run your Non-Catalyst Equipped engine on any flavour of petrol you want - though these days you'll be hard pressed to find 4-star anyway.

Simon.
