Gearbox

xj6/xj40 2.9 jaguar 1990 5 speed manual.

Anyone advise whether this is a Getrag box.

Tony.

Re: Gearbox

Tony

Yes it is a Getrag, but I'm almost certain it hasn't got a detachable bellhousing, so no good.

The box you want is fitted to pre 1987 XJ6.

Kev Davies is the man to confirm whether I'm right or wrong.

Re: Gearbox

Hi

You mentioned that its pre 1987 XJ6. Which model is best or does it not matter?

Presumably pre 87 XJ6 can be used for all suspension parts, diff and prop shaft then?

Re: Gearbox

Yup! that's about it.
Cars after that will be XJ40 which is no good to you unless you're building a Dax De Dion.
As for the gearbox, as long as it has a detachable bellhousing it should be OK.
As Mike said.

Re: Gearbox

Thanks Kev, You've just cleared something up for me. I didnt realise the difference between a XJ40 and a XJ6 - that one preceeded the other!!

Re: Gearbox

The biggest confusion is that as the car is badged they are both XJ6's.
If it has outboard rear discs it is an XJ40.

Re: Gearbox

Tony. It's worth doublechecking that gearbox you mentioned. My Getrag came off a Jag XJ40, 1988 model. Can't remember if it was a 2.9 or 4.2. Anyway, the same box also appeared in the 3.6 litre XJS, and I think they continued to use them for some years into the 90s. As Mike said, make sure it has the detachable bellhousing. You will be replacing that with one from your chosen engine plus an adaptor kit (I got mine from AK.) The same Getrag with minor differences was used in some BMW 5 and 7 series cars, also Opel Monza I beileve. When you find one keep all of the gearlever mechanism and the slip yoke (may aswell take whole propshaft to be sure!) Good luck. Ian.

The link to the seller doesn`t work I tried last week

Anyhow I`ve managed to get one from an xj40 (1986)complete with prop.

I was offered a t5 at a good price but it won`t handle the torque too well takes about 250 ft/lbs. Shame because it came with Chevy bellhousing.

Tony. 8-months before the build starts again
