Sva / Mot

Reading some of the postings, I'm slightly confused about when to SVA test, and when to MOT, register & tax. I was under the impression that you had to have an SVA before you re-registered the vehicle as Dax/Pilgrim/etc, then you could register it, MOT it then Tax it. I was also under the misguidance that, as the vehicle is not registered & taxed, it has to e driven to The SVA centre on a trailer.

It appears from the postings that some people drive their newly built cars for an MOT prior to SVA - sounds like a good idea to get it on the road, but what about boring old tax & insurance. I appreciate that, legally, a vehicle can driven without an MOT to a prebooked MOT testing station, but under what number plate? Presumably the donor vehicle plates.

Can the vehicle be driven on the road to the SVA station - I quite fancy a long drive up to Norwich in the Sumo - again, under what registration, MOT & tax.

Can someone put me straight on what is permitted?

you can drive to the m.o.t. no problem as long as it is booked in, you can drive to the s.v.a. as long as its booked in.but the d.v.l.a. inspection you have to take it on a trailer or trasporter & don't forget to copy everything.

You will also have to inform your insurance company as you do need insurance but this is not a problem the specialist Kit Car insurance know all the In's and outs to do with Kit Cars and getting them SVA'd etc

If you do take your cobra out to MOT or SVA then DO NOT do it using the donor plates, just leave the car "blank" but make sure you have a chassis number, the insurance people will want it.

Re: Sva / Mot

Step 1

Take the car when almost finished to the local DVLA centre on a trailer for inspection. This inspection will decide if its an age related plate or a Q plate. ( Points per major donor part = prize in age related plate see other posts). You cannot drive legally to this inspection.

Step 2

Upgrade your build insurance( if you have it) to cover road risks. They will do this on the VIN/chassis number. Make sure that the insurance company sends you a cover note as you will need this to register the car at the DVLA .

Step 3

Take the car for an MOT to have all your work checked over, emissions checked, headlamp aim adjusted etc. You can drive the car to the MOT station without plates as long as its a prebooked appointment, and the car is insured. It is not necessary to have an MOT to register the car but it is an excellent way of finding potential SVA problems.

Step 4

Clutching the MOT and emissions sheet take the car for its prebooked SVA, legal without plates but with insurance, making sure you blast past any speed cameras on the way.......its almost the last time you'll get away with it............

Step 5

With the MAC cerificate in your hand ( take a photocopy you wont have it for long) nip along to the DVLA office with your forms. As they have already inspected the car they will issue the new reg etc the same day as long as its before 11.00am , well this is the rule anyway in Birmingham. Pay your £203 for road tax and reg fee and you're legal. Go get plates made up ( again blatting past the boxes), and fit them.

You're now Legal !!

Cheers,

Tony

Re: Sva / Mot

My local MOT garage won't accept bookings - you just turn up and have it MOT'd "While-U-Wait". Does this mean that if I were to drive there and they were full, then I could drive it home and try again later? It would be a dreadful shame if I "accidentally" chose a really busy time and had to test drive the car a few times before the MOT...

Many thanks. That seems to have clarified the situation nicely.

Hi Robin.
The reason you have to be booked is so that there is a record of you actually going for an appointment and are not just out on a Jolly.............................Been there, tried that one.
