Chevy Flywheels

Cool,

Smashed through the 14k barrier, with just the faintest whimper from my ailing bank account.

Still not got anything other than a chassis assembled, but things are moving, somewhat in the wrong direction at the moment.

Got the Tremec gearbox package for the SBC from Brian at repower about 5 weeks ago, and now my engines arrived i've found the flywheel doesn't fit.

Is this just a simple swap, ie are there two types and i've got the wrong one, or is the start of a whole series of nightmares?

Will the existing clutch plate & housing fit the new flywheel, or will i need the whole lot swapped?

Have to give him a call tomorrow and find out.

Re: Chevy Flywheels

what is it that doesn't fit ?
there are two ring gears available so you need the starter motor to suit which ever you have.

Re: Chevy Flywheels

I think things are somewhat more serious than that.

The bolts are set at a different diameter, and the hole in the centre is a different diameter, and the outer toothed ring is another diameter.#

In short it don't fit!

Engine came from EF, but they knew i was sourcing a manual flywheel & box from the UK, ie from Repower, so it came without one.

Re: Chevy Flywheels

I suspect you have a ford flywheel or something daft.
I think there's only one crank bolting pattern for SBC's.

Re: Chevy Flywheels

Check the teeth on the flywheel

168 and 153 Chevy
130 and 143 Chrysler
184 and 157 Ford
166 Pontiac

In the summit catalogue they do Chevy 168 and a 153 tooth internally balanced and a 153 tooth externally balanced with small journal ring gear.

Don't know if this makes sense to anybody

Re: Chevy Flywheels

There are different bolt patterns for different chevy cranks (maybe 3) as well as the 2 different ring gear tooth patterns. I have a 153 tooth twin plate steel sfi clutch combo and I now it didn't fit one crank I tested it on.

Re: Chevy Flywheels

OK, bit of measuring..

The flywheel i have from Repower is 153 teeth, 2.5 inch hole in the centre and 6 bolt holes 45mm centre to centre.

The crank has a 2" casting in the middle, with bolt holes 37mm centre to centre, and the starter is set for a 168 tooth flywheel.
