SVA and Exhaust Emissions

To whom it may concern

Am I right in thinking that I will not be made to take an emissions test at the SVA, if you can prove that your engine was manufactured before 1975, ie 1973.

Cheers all

Miket

RE: SVA and Exhaust Emissions

Can't remember the exact dates, but I think you are not far off - visible smoke test only.

RE: SVA and Exhaust Emissions

If you are worried about emissions at the SVA just weaken it off while they have the pipe shoved up your exhaust and then richen it back up again when you leave, easy.

RE: SVA and Exhaust Emissions

Cheers Wilf

I wish I could have put a £100 bet on that you would be the first to reply.
You are a mind of information.

Dave

My carb is a Holley 750 vacuum secondary. Do I weaken it at Idle mixture screws on each side of the carb, if not can you point me in the right direction.

Thanks to you both

RE: SVA and Exhaust Emissions

MikeT - if your engine can be proved to be pre Aug 1 1975, don't worry about leaning off the idle mixture.
All the test will consist of is;

1/ Check engine idle speed is not set much above "normal"
2/run engine at 2500rpm for 20 secs (or 1/2 rated engine max rpms if lower)
3/return to idle speed, assess visible emissions, verify engine is at proper idle speed
4/blip engine revs to 2500 again, check for visible emissions.

all this done at normal operating temps etc. Only reason for failure would be dense blue or black smoke for more than 5 seconds at idle speed, or enough smoke or vapour during acceleration to "obscure the view of other road users".

If you can't pass this, your engine must be well and truly sha**ed!
