A couple of questions

Hi all

I've been identifying my engine parts (SBC) to order from the states and the guy at Northern Auto Parts has asked some question, like

1-wire alternators - has anybody used these, I'm building an AK, is the loom easy to adapt for this or shall I get a normal one?

What amp alternator do I use 70, 80 or 100 amps or does it not matter

How many teeth on the fly wheel?

Pulley Sets, I presume as I'm not running power steering I'll only need 1 upper and a dual lower.

Are there any water pumps specs or recommedations. There are some really cheap ones are they poor quality?

Thanks
Gary

Re: A couple of questions

Gary, one wire alternators are ok. Bascically even though it says one wire, that is the main power output to the batter / car system. You can still use the 'excitation' wire to signal the ign warning light. Amperage will depend on what loading you intend to put on the system, e.g. if you were going to install masses of spot lights (unlikely) or a super douper ice install (also unlikely) a low amperage alternator will suffice. However, as the cost is about the same, you might as well have the higher amperage one (its no detriment) as you will always have the power you may need in the future. I run a single wire 100 amp one on my sbc.

Pulleys are widely available. I run 6-rib billet aluminium ones from March Performance Products (ordered through Summit) including March adjusters and brackets. Mega nice.

Water pumps. You require standard rotation and either short or long versions. Some people run short pumps others run long. What does matter though is that you must order the correct pulleys for either short or long water pump. I run a long pump because this gives me more clearance at the back of the alternator for the wiring. Alternators on short water pump installations are VERY close to the offside cylinder head and hence, the wiring VERY close to an earth. Potential fire (unfused wiring!!). Hope this helps.

Re: A couple of questions

Take some care on the flywheel point. There are two numbers of teeth, 153 and 168, two diameters 12.75 & 14 inches and 2 bolt patterns 3 and 3.5 inches.

Check they all match the crankbellhousingstarterclutch combination you have or are planning to get.!!

Re: A couple of questions

My OH above hasn't stressed enough about the fly wheel thing. I thought the bottom had fallen out of his world at the prospect of having to ship the thing back to the states!! Luckily things panned out and he is grinning again:thumb:

Re: A couple of questions

I cook badly, I clean badly and ironing is only required when things aren't quite dry enough to wear!

Why is he with me then you ask? Well you will have to ask him!!!!

Re: A couple of questions

Then I understand why he's with you then coz mine can't cook at all (I do it), she's the messy one (I tidy up) and she has the same ironing principals as yourself :thumb: . Nice one.
