Tyre dilemma

I know everyone is waxing lyrical about the Michelin Pilot Sports but I believe Michelin also make Pilot Sport PS2 tyres which are meant to be even better (see link)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ay.jsp?type=MP

The only complication is that they don't make tyres with the same profile as my existing Proxes

Q1. Does anyone have any comments/experience of the Pilot Sport vs Pilot Sport PS2s?
Q2. Does anyone think I will run into any problems if I scale down from 255/45/17 to 255/40/17 at the rear?

Assistance much appreciated ...

Cheers

Re: Tyre dilemma

Hi Chris ,
the obvious one is that your speedo calibration will change due to the smaller rolling radius of the 40 profile trye. Not much though your speedo will read a bit fast.
also beware of potholes, a 40 profile doesn't leave much side wall to protect the rim.

Re: Tyre dilemma

No need for the 'welcome' although it was still appreciated. I have been a member for a couple of years but I was on a temporary ID as I couldn't access my old account for various reasons .. Back now though

My other alternative is to run regular Pilot Sports on the front and PS2s on the rear (as they make those with a 45 profile) ... Or would that not be recommended?

Re: Tyre dilemma

Chris

8 million miles for the Pilot Sports vs 191,000 miles for the PS2s, so the average will be a bit off.

The reports are that they ride a bit harder as well, horses for courses though, give them a go and let us know, I will be needing a new set not long after I get back on the road, have a lot of catching up to do. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

Re: Tyre dilemma

You are talking to a man who never softens up his suspension after come off the track ... I like to be able to read newspapers by driving over them and feeling the vibrations through the wheels. I will give them a try but do you think that mixing front/rear tyres would cause me dramas?

Re: Tyre dilemma

Mixing front and rears could get a little interesting if the grip characteristics are much different.
Only one way to find out I suppose. :thumb:
Either way as long as get used to the handling, and know how it's going to react when you "chuck it in" I'm sure it will be fine.

I have never been in favour of mixing fronts and backs, too many complications of differing grip, temps etc, could lead to an interesting drive......

Re: Tyre dilemma

I will go for the regular Pilot Sports and hopefully next time it comes to renewing they will make 255/45 for the rear. Maybe tirerack.com will have a more detailed review by then. Thx for your help
