Another good day

Well, today was the time to get the engine (350 Chevy) onto the chassis. My first challenge was to get the engine out of my front garage through the single door at the back... Once engine was mounted onto the proper V8 lifting tool, all went relatively well... Found out after mounting that the 3/8" fuel pipe I put there is in fact not long enough, so now have a choice to extend it with a new piece of copper nickel by about 1 foot, or to use the flexible pipe under the edge of the bell housing to the fuel pump.... What do people think?...

Engine mounts supplied by AK were pretty exact in their mounting positions. Great job..

Anyway, now time to add all the anciliaries and get to a position where I can add the body....

Re: Another good day

Hi Goldie.

Have you decided on what diff ratio you are using?
Here are some speed/rev figures for 4th gear per 1000 rpm.

2.88:1.........................................27 mph
3.058:1 or 3.07:1.........................25 mph
3.31:1.........................................23 mph
3.54:1.........................................22 mph

The last two sets of figures are fine for high reving 4 pot engines but at 70 mph you could do with getting your revs down as low as possible (The nearer to 2000 rpm the better) for cruising down the M way.

At 70 mph you will be reving at:-
2.88 diff .......................2600 rpm
3.058/3.07diff................2770 rpm
3.31 diff........................3000 rpm
3.54 diff........................3200 rpm

These figures are based on tyre sizes:-
255/45/17
but are close to:-
295/35/18,
245/50/16,
235/60/15, (I'm not sure what size AK use)

Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know but I'm bored.

Re: Another good day

Hi Goldie.

140 MPH:thumb:

4 speed boxes almost always have a ratio of 1:1 for top

Do you know if your box is a close or wide ratio? I could give you the rpm/ mph for all gears if you know which box you have.

Nothing clever on my part, I have a programme called Motormath that "Bowtie" wrote some time ago and made it downloadable from here but the link doesn't seem to work these days.

Re: Another good day

Here are the two different ratio sets:-
(And the speed per 1000 rpm)

Close:-
1.................220:1................11mph
2.................164:1................14mph
3.................147:1................16mph
4.....................1:1................23mph

Wide:-
1................252:1...................9mph
2................188:1.................12mph
3................147:1.................16mph
4....................1:1.................23mph

The beauty of a 5 speed box is that with a 5th gear ratio of 0.67:1 (Tremec and such like) you would have 35mph per 1000rpm in 5th. Not much good for thrashing about but great when you want to save some fuel and your ear drums on a long run........Like going to Stoneleigh or Elvington etc.:thumb:

No Need to take the side peanel off.
Just put the box in first gear then turn the input shaft and count how many turns are needed to make the output shaft turn once.
2 1/4 means it is a close ratio and 2 1/2 turns means that it is a wide ratio..............Easy peasy:thumb:
