Gearbox question.

I have been offered a gearbox from a Toyota Supra (twin turbo) for not a lot of money. The gearbox is from a recently crashed, and therefore scrapped car. The scrapper wants £70 for it.

Does anyone know if the box will mate to my Rover 3.5 V8 easily and are there any pitfalls I should be wary of?

I'm not sure how the clutch on these gearboxes work, but having just sorted mine out I don't care. I thnink I should be able to work it out (even if it takes me as long again).

Thanks as always,
Tony B

RE: Gearbox question.

From what I have heard, the Toyota gearbox that you have been offered is the one to have. It will take alot of torque and can quite happily be mated up to the larger engines like the Chevys and the Ford V8. But for these applications, the gearbox does need to have come from a Turbo Supra. £70 is not alot of money to pay for it, although you will be paying up to £350+ for the adaptor plate to mate it up to your engine. Contact Paul Hinkley at P&D Sportscars about the adaptor plate. He may be able to help you.

RE: Gearbox question.

The box is a superb box and if used sensibly will easily take the Rover Power. You will be amazed at how silky smooth the gear change is, I miss that since I got the Tremec. Beware though there are a lot of standard Toyota Hiace boxes that are being sold as Toyota Supra Turbo boxes so ask to see the car it came from. The Japanese Litace box is as strong and is suitable but not the Hiace.
Mike.

RE: Gearbox question.

IF its genuine tt supra, the power from a rover is nothing comapred to the twin turbo of a supra, and it will easily take it. I loved mine!

RE: Gearbox question.

Turns out this car is a 3.0i Turbo, not a twin turbo. Does this make a difference to the box used?

I need to tell this guy this week wether I want this or not, and if this box is suitable then I would like to get hold of it.

Thanks for your help,
Tony B

RE: Gearbox question.

At that price I'd honestly just go for it.

RE: Gearbox question.

The original 3.0i turbo developed around 255BHP if memory serves me correct, that is of course pulling a lot more weight than your cobra.
