Engine start up

OK, the time has come to start up the beast.

The dials have arrived, i need a few hours to jury rig the power and sensors, and as long as the boys arrive to lift the body off out of the way, its a green light for saturday.

The engines been run in already in the US, so the cams are all sorted. Any last minute tips like, turn it over until the oil pressure comes up with the plugs out, then whack them in and see what happens.

fire extinguisher at the ready!! :thumb:

Hopefully I'll be able to hear it 40 miles down the M4.
Good Luck. :thumb:

I would still be inclined to prime the engine first by taking the dizzy off and driving the oil pump with an electric drill and extended shaft, until oil appears in the rocker cover area via tha push rods.

Make sure the oil pump is rotated anti clockwise if its a Ford (dizzy at the correct end!) :thumb:

and clockwise if its a Chevy (dizzy at the wrong end) :finger:

No need to take the plugs out if you prime her first. GOOD LUCK!!

Re: Engine start up

Hmm. I may well scibe a line down the dizzy and mounting, whip it off and see what is required.

A power drill i have, an assortment of metal bits i have, a chevy dizzy input shaft i'm kind of lacking.

Do i just need what looks like a bloody big flat blade screwdriver on a drill? (Perhaps a long flat wood drill bit, then the pointy bit will keep it central on the oil pump as it spins?)

Re: Engine start up

Grease,No need to prime, as the engine is not completly dry. Just fill up with oil (use a good quality non synthetic oil such as Vavoline or Castrol GTX), disconnect ignition (red lead to HEI coil) and turn over the engine until you get oil pressure. Reconnect ignition; check fuel, pump accelerator once to ensure auto choke flap is closed. Ensure leads are clear of exhaust ports if you are running without headers. Have you connected up coolent hoses? If not do not run engine for more than a few seconds as it could damage water pump. If you have connected water hoses, after running engine for a short period, drain coolent and refill (coolent may be rust coloured initially from surface rust inside the block coolent galleries). To protect engine, use a good 50/50 antifreeze mix to protect againt corrosion.

Have you fitted a throttle return spring?

You should now be good to go. WARNING - when that puppy fires up it will scare the **it out of you!

Regards
