Do your aluminum spats get ding'd up easy?

Do any of you have the cobraspares aluminum (rear fender guard) spats? Do they get dinged up by pebbles and road debris really easy?

Also, wondering if you can get them in non-polished and how they fit on an original Cobra. Thanks ahead of time for your responses.

Yes they do get hit by stones etc which is why they are there. I think all are polished or chrome. If you dont want them shiny I guess the only way would be to paint or spray them.

With regards authenticity these are Replicas not the real thing. I would think about what looks best and.at least with polished alloy you can easily rub down the chips and buff up again.

Are you sure you want stainless. They will still get the pits from flying stones, but they will be an absolute pig to polish out. Also with aluminium you can massage them to fit perfectly.

5 minutes with some light aluminium abrasive paper, then a polishing mop on an electric drill with buffing compound will clean them up in no time.

    Mike,
When you say "clean them up", does this include removing dings somehow, or are you just referring to light scratch removal only?

I know how to remove scratches from aluminum with sandpaper and compound, but not sure about how easy the spats are to work with to remove dings.

If they don't get chipped and dented then you just ain't driving fast enough.

Mine are ali and they get a right hammering but clean up ok with a solvoautosol and a bit of wax polish.
Alternatively you can buy helecopter tape at a reasonable price these days. (It's the stuff they put on the leading edge of rota blades to stop chips)
Did have an add somewhere but couldn't find it sorry.

Re: Do your aluminum spats get ding'd up easy?

Most of you are commenting that your spats "clean up pretty easy" so I guess this means they don't get dented up that bad then. Nobody has mentioned having to take them off to remove dents/dings from time to time. Correct?

I just have no idea as to how soft the aluminum is, but from what all of you have said they seem to be fairly durable and able to sustain small pebbles thrown at them.

Oh, I'd like to see the helicopter tape that was referred to... interesting.

    Thanks Again.

Yes I have removed my guards to push dents out but sharp stones do score the ali.
The dents and scratches are still there but don't appear to in yer face when polished up.
