| Phone scam Received the following today. Mobile Phone & Email Scams I have received the following detail of Mobile Phone and Email scams. Please do not ignore this and be on guard for threats like these! If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that, he or she is a company engineer, or telling you that they're checking your mobile line, and you have to press # 90 or #09 or any other number. End this call immediately without pressing any numbers. There is a fraud company using a device that once you press 90 or #09 they can access your "SIM" card and make calls at your expense. Forward this message to as many friends as you can, to stop it. ALSO Please Be Extremely Careful especially if using internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail and so on. This information arrived this morning from Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who accesses the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless email with a Power Point Presentation "Life is beautiful. pps" If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and delete it immediately. if you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful", subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. WE NEED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO STOP THIS VIRUS. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the antivirus Software's are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself "life owner". Tony

| Re: Phone scam Hi Tony These are the E-mail equivilent of a chain letter. They waste your time and the slow the E-mail system down when forwarded within business networks Etc. I usually read them for a laugh then delete them. Some of the Hoaxes are quite convincing Though. This page may explain more about this particular one. http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/avidaebela.html More can be found on http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/ Craig

| Re: Phone scam Just looked at logged on here for the first time in couple of months. The virus one may well be a hoax, but the phone one is not. We recieve many security upates at work I'm not prepared to let you no where I work, but our security services work very closely with the the police, military, and foreign office. If we get a warning about something, then it is genuine. What actually happens is once you dial whatever you are asked to dial, you are then connected to an international premium rate number, which can charge you upto £15 a minute. Generally the time is around 10 minutes, and you are charged for the full time even if you hang up. Telecom companies are powerless to prevent this, as it is billed to an overseas number. This is used by various overseas "organisations" to raise a lot of money, as this scam is targeted at most of Europe, Northern America, and Australasia. |
