brake light failure

Thanks for all the headlight tips.
Before I get around to doing that job.
On a run sunday and the guy behind recons I have no brake lights.
They do work but only if the peddle is pushed down really hard. I believe The switch is a fluid pressure switch. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a bleeding of the system to rectify? Do these switches "when found" have any kind of adjustment screw, nipple or lug??

Not even sure what I'm looking for here.
Don't mean to be dense just not used to so many niggles.

Good run sunday had ears like lollypops could have snapped them off the side of my head. Bloody great.
regards

Re: brake light failure

Strangely at the Le Mans classic this year we had two of them fail on two different Cobras, although Plods turned out to be a wiring problem. :thumb:

Re: brake light failure

Dave,
I had a similar problem with mine a few months ago.. would only work when you stamped on the pedal. It seems like the switches need a fair amount of pressure to "switch on" the circuit. Thanks to some advice from WIRES on the forum I fitted a relay into the circuit which switches much faster and it works a treat now and the lights come on much quicker. It saved me having to buy a new brake switch. I think I might have the wiring diags still if you want them.
Cheers,
Kevin.....

Re: brake light failure

Kevin T
If you can find the diagrams or simply (and I mean simply) explain a solution I would be grateful.

Andy s
Next time I'll throw some new light bulbs over my shoulder and if you would be so kind to change them being as you were so close.

Ps I think Roger should have done the Porshe it was a shame the lanes were so narrow. I think the 911 was pushing his luck. Bit of a Chav.

Regards

Re: brake light failure

Had the same problem on another car a couple of years ago.
The pressure switch was old & sticking. It would only operate when the brakes were applied really hard.
Changed the switch for a new one & problem solved. The brake lights then came on with only slight pedal pressure.

Re: brake light failure

The same happened to me on Sunday. But no matter how hard I pressed on the brake peddle they would not light. So will have to investigate further. Loose wire, faulty switch, or maybe a relay.

Thanks for the info.

Re: brake light failure

Simple test, get a continuity tester on the switch and put light pressure on the brake. If it doesn't show a connection, the switch is buggered.

Happened to me ages ago, on my Mini (i think?!) the switch being hydraulic fails easier than a simple reed / microswitch on the pedal itself. If it were me i'd just add a mechanical one and run the wires to it instead.

Re: brake light failure

My switch failed on the way over to Le Mans this year. This was a real pain, keeping reminding the guys behind me got irritating for all of us.
I bought a new switch, I think it is a VW Golf 1980's one, swapped it, no need to bleed brakes if you're real quick. No problem now.

Cheers,
Neil.
