Harley sold, looking for Cobra

Hi All

Long time since I last posted, but it's been quite a year with job and family loses. However, I've finally sold my FLSTC Harley for £12000 and am now ready to buy either a ready built Dax, which I can strip and re-build or a new kit.

I see that V12 Cobs are quite low in price! Why is this? The example I've seen is very well finished, but is just under £15000. Would there be much problem in dropping the V12 and fitting a Chevy V8 with manual box, the sort of build which appears fairly standard.

Regards
Dave Rawlings

Re: Harley sold, looking for Cobra

What is it with Redditch and its environs that make it such a good place for Cobra nuts?:thumb:

Ian aka Kurrmett, who lives about 3 mins from Studley near The Dog pub, has done exactly the same as you are planning to do, bought a V12 Dax, ripped out the Jag engine, has a Chevy V8 and box ready to go in , stripped the rest of the car and is now just starting to build it up again before sending it off for painting. I won't tell you the chosen colour but its not Lime Green, thank God, which is his penchant.

I suggest that you go and take a look at his project. For myself, I'm only 10 mins max away from you in Abbey Park so if you ever want a natter and a gander at an AK drop me a PM.

Cheers,

Tony

Re: Harley sold, looking for Cobra

"I see that V12 Cobs are quite low in price! Why is this? ".....Because they have too many cylinders! same goes for V6 and 4 pot fords

If you're going to buy a dax to strip down and rebuild then you can get them as low as 11k. I've also looked at an engine transplant as a "cheap" way of getting my cobra. V6 Sumos go for as little as 7.5k.

One thing to watch out for is the cut outs for side pipes, they are not all in the same place for all engines so you could end up having to patch the body. I also believe they are not symmetrical (left to right) for a chevy, ie the exit point is further back one side, but somebody might correct me.

Hi Tony

Easy access to Motorway Test Lanes is my answer! Could you ask Kermutt to give me a call on 01527 853075? I'd like to have a chat, and ask some relevant questions.

Re: Harley sold, looking for Cobra

Most people have custom headers made so the location of the cutout's is not a problem as it can all be taken into account when fabricating. It just means you possibly wont be able to use a ready made set. :thumb:

Hi Dave, I wrote up my change over from a Dax V12 To a brand new crate Chevy and Tremac box, for a Snake Torque article a few years ago. Drop me a line on "debsnclive@aol.com" and I'll find it for you.Clive

Kevchard

not picking on them, just pointing out that they have the wrong number of cylinders

That a side I'll probably be buying a V6 as a first cobra!

Re: Harley sold, looking for Cobra

I will think twice before offering any pc help to you again mike :O). Don't get sucked into the V8 is best arguement Paul (don't take ribbing as personal, i have learned to just know i am right in my choice :O) ). There are V8 engines and 'proper' V6 engines.
Are you not biting TonyM?
Cheers
