Re: vin number

I'm not 100% on this, typing out loud a bit, but I would think you get issued an actual VIN number, as there is a system that produces them (it's well know that the motor industry have a looming problem as they are running out of possible combinations for new vin numbers for new cars using the current world wide VIN system).Looking at my pre sva car, it's very clear the chassis number was chosen/requested when the RAM kit was ordered, as it's very cobra related, and that was simply put on the log book as a chassis number change along with make change when it was inspected post build, a legitimate method pre SVA . I doubt you'd be able to do that now though.I think pre sva, you could easily submit a frame or chassis number and it would end up on the log book under 'VIN/Chassis/Frame number'. Post SVA, I'm sure I've read somewhere that you get issued a vin after the sva is complete. I don't think it would hurt to ask dvla or your local SVA inspection centre (if you can ever get through!). Making one up is a nice idea; bit like a private plate, but if you make up and submit a letter/number combination that is already on another vehicle (highly likely as they're running out), you'll end up with an identity dispute that could get very messy (impounded vehicle?), I'm guessing it would show up funny on an HPI check, and it may render your car unusable until the identity is determined? I'd talk to the SVA people and just ask 'where and when do I get my VIN from?
Good luck,
Steve

Re: vin number

I'm guessing its not something we need to worry about. Most modern cars dont have a seperate chassis, so the question is irrelevant. The VIN is the ID number for the whole vehicle.

My GD is something like GD427J-224 Its a unique number and applies to the whole car, even though its only stamped onto the chassis.

I'll just blunder on in ignorance until SVA day and take it from there. Any problems, Bottesford is only a phone call away. :thumb: :thumb:

Re: vin number

Assuming that your kit didnt come with a Vin no. You can make up your own. The norm these days is a 17 digit alpha numeric combination, Something like RAMSC427********* any numbers you like, DOB, Wedding Aniversary, Date of original manufucture of kit, or engine no. This number must either be stamped on the chasssis or stamped on a plate fixed to the chassis. DVLA advise that you stamp it on the chassis, but it's only advise.

Re: vin number

Nearly all the all the RAM chassis numbers started CSX6- and then the number followed. Steve

Re: vin number

Just my two pence worth, Speaking to the DVLA guy in April, you need the chassis number stamped onto the chassis so the vehicle can be recognised by the authorities and the chassis number needs to be in an easily readable place, advice was stamp the number on the chassis underneath where it is not easily removable and then have a seperate plate with the number on under the bonnet for easy Id. the number can be anything as long as it is long enough to not get confused with another car, ie don't have COB1 have TONYM000COB1 etc. :thumb:

Re: vin number

I just got form INF26 from the dvla with an enquiry I made about the history of my car (£5 well spent, it lists every owner, even right back to regsitration of the original donor!)Anyway; in INF 26, the DVLA says:
'There is a legal requirement for all vehicles used on the public highway to carry a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This may often be lost when a vehicle is substantially rebuilt, particularly in the case of kit vehicles where the replacement body shell may not have neen stamped by the manufacturer. In such circumstances, the VRO will allocate a replacement VIN. Vehicles should not be stamped prior to referral to a VRO.The VRO will issue and authorisation letter and registration will not take effect until the agency receives confirmation that the vehicle has been stamped with the correct identity'

If anyone is interested, I can scan and upload the leaflet.

I'm guessing the bottom line is if you've got a chassis/body shell with a number, it will end up being the VIN, if not, you will have to go through the process above.

17 digits in all and had to be stamped into the chassis on the offside of the vehicle
