Pressed plate manufacturers

Can anyone suggest a maker of the older style black and white pressed aluminium number plates?
A local shop quoted me £50 for a pair which I think is a bit exessive.
Thanks

Simon

RE: Pressed plate manufacturers

On the same subject, I have seen plates (for the front), made from black wire mesh, with silver letters attached. I've never found out who makes these, anyone know?

Simon

I just got a pair of pressed ally plates from Vintage Plates, they look good, but they are made of very thin ally, I have put my front plate on top of an old plastic plate to give it a bit of strength, the rear plate has'nt got the forces blowing against it, so it is fine.

At £18.98 per pair inc VAT and postage, I think they are good value.

PS. If you would like me to take a photo and post it please let me know.

RE: Pressed plate manufacturers

Sorry if I bring up unwelcome issues but I was under the impression that the "old style" number plates could only be fitted to vehicles that had them originally. ie if your Donor vehicle had the yellow /white plates fitted at time of manufacture you are stuck with the same type of plate.

There are specific laws relating to number plates which can cause problems if you are followed by some over enthusiastic fuzz .............anyone know what rules apply ?

I too would like the "old fashioned" look but I fear I will be stuck with the standard yellow /white.

Cheers,
Tony

Tony,

I THINK its from about '72-'73 onwards that the newer yellow/white plates are required. Having said that, I've seen LOTS of cars with newer reg's with the old style plates.

RE: Pressed plate manufacturers

Simon,
Don't know if you are interested but I had some of the old fashioned acrylic "engraved from the rear" style plates made up by a company in Birmingham. They are black with silver letters and (in my opinion) extremely smart. Price was around £35 from memory.

You are correct, the yellow/white plates where introduced in 1972 from K reg onwards, I have a plate with an A reg as a suffix, which is 1963. Even though my car has been registered in 2002, I'll take the risk with my old style plates and plead ignorance mi lord.
