MOT and V5 Stuff

I have taken the following from http://www.totalkitcar.com regarding V5 etc.

You have been warned.

I was chatting with our SVA expert and contributor Ian Hopley ……….. this week and he reminded me that the plan to link all the UK’s MOT testing stations to Swansea is very much on course and indeed the scheme is currently being piloted at a few selected centres around the country. It will certainly send a few shockwaves around the industry, as it will weed out any remaining incorrectly registered older kits making them instantly liable for SVA, which in most cases they won’t be able to comply with. There seems to be a lot of people thinking that this will apply to somebody else and not them. Wake up because if you have a cobra replica for example, described on the V5 as a Jaguar or something similar you are in ‘Troublesville’. Bottom line is, if your car is a DAX or a Pilgrim Sumo, then it must say so on the registration document, simple as that. I must confess that this is one area that makes my blood boil because in this instance the DVLA have been more than fair and ran an amnesty for all owners to register their kits properly. All you had to do was send in your V5 to Swansea telling them what your car should be described as and they would send you back a correct one. I really will find it difficult to have sympathy for anyone who couldn’t be bothered to take advantage of this amnesty. If you have a genuine reason for not taking advantage of the amnesty then contact me and I’ll see what can be done for you. No promises though and you must act now before it’s too late.

RE: MOT and V5 Stuff

Robert,

Don't know if you class this as a genuine reason but I bought my car in Dec. 2000 in complete naivity about the whole registration process. The guy who sold it to me seemed extremely genuine having built it himself in 1995 but never mentioned registration. The car is a bute and as such he should have known about the re-registration amnesty. Had he missed the boat by Dec 2000 and found some mug (me) to sell it to. Guess what too, I cannot get hold of him anymore.
I only became aware of the whole issue in October of this year when I tried to sell the car and no-one was interested on I mentioned it had Jaguar on the V5. It was only the fourth person to ring who actually told me why.
As such I now have a rapidly depreciating, non-legal, undriveable car that until 2 months ago was my pride and joy and now fills me with despair.
It appears I will have to strip the car to chassis and rebuild it - being partially disabled this will be a little difficult. Any assistance you could lend would be gratefully received.

Give the DVLA a call on Friday afternoon, they will probably be in a good mood then.

Ditto to Robs post.
If you call them and explain the whole situation.
Also if you have any documentation that goes with the car like:-
Old MOT's
Copy of the original reciept for the chassis and/ or any other paperwork that might convince them that the car has been used on the road since before the introduction of the SVA test.
I quick call to me before you ring the DVLA at Swansea could be benificial in helping you stay away from them issuing you with a "Q" reg.
07785 702005 (Before 10:00PM any day).

Don't worry, it's not the end of the world.............Just yet.

RE: MOT and V5 Stuff

One point that I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to. If your car is either based on an imported model or was imported whole before the SVA came in and was registered in the UK based on the details of the vehicle from the registration given to it in it's home country what's the deal. I know of a couple of cars that run on registrations based on thier imported details, thus stating that they are 1965 Ford open top sports cars(as registered on thier titles), the imported date and declared manufactured in 1965(for example)and previously registered as thus. One car uses parts from a car that was damged in transit to the UK and now contains many restoration parts.
If an old MG can keep it's title when the whole body chassis unit is replaced with a new one, a new engine fitted and suspension replaced with all new upgrades(in reality an brand new car)then would these previously registered cars be legal?
It would seem to me that if you look at cars sutch as Jaguar XKSS, D Type and C type replicas, especially Proteus etc that they always keep thier Jaguar ID even though they probably only use as many old parts as we do. The realy expensive replicas that for some reason are accepted by the Classic car sceen and are not sceen as kit cars always have period registration.

Going back to the imported cars. Any ideas anyone? If you import a car that is already registered in another country as a 1965 Ford open top sports, will the DVLA just accept that as it's registration? It would be deemed as a classic and there for not need a SVA and be tax free.

Just a thought, Simon
