Oil Cooler details

Hi All,

I've decided it's about time for me to fit an Oil Cooler, however I'd just like to check that I'm going to get the right bits and pieces and ask for your advice.

It's for a Rover V8 fitted into a GD with the remote filter already in place.

I’ve looked at the ThinkAutomotive site (www.thinkauto.com), but I’m not clear on one or two points.

Cooler= 13 Row, 235mm wide (any other recommendations? 16 row??)

Sandwich Plate= Type A with in built thermostat?

Braided Hoses= Moquip Braided Aero hose, Help! What size hose, what type/size of fittings on the ends and what lengths??

Or if anyone has any bits of the above looking for a good home etc :thumb:

Many thanks

Jim

Re: Oil Cooler details

Jim, don't know if you've sorted this out yet but have been doing a bit of looking round myself. Original cobra's had 16 row 235mm coolers and you should be looking at one with JIC fittings allowing connection of size 8 (3/4") pipe.

Not sure about sandwich plates yet but hope this is a start.

Good luck.

Re: Oil Cooler details

Hi Jim, I had a problem with my RV8 on track days with the oil temp getting really hot very very quickly  to the point that at Elvington I could only do 2 flying laps at the most before I had to stop to let things cool down. So early last year I fitted a cooler and remote from think automotive, very god service from them and since fitting it, it is a complete dream. I have since done a track day at Spar last year on a stinking hot day, where on one occasion I stayed out on the tract giving it all I could and the oil never went above 95 deg.

The cooler I fitted was a 13 row one as you stated ( as I thought the 16 row one was too tall and looked stupid ). I spoke to Russel Ram about this and he stated to use 3/4 OD 5/8 ID hose. Although this might look a bit on the big side as the RV8 is a low pressure high volume oil system this is what is required, I seam to remember that the people at Think Auto already knew this. The thermostatic plate I used was part No OTSP1 , hopefully this is the one you mean.
Only other thing I did was to change the temperature of the thermostat in the plate as the standard one opens at somewhere like 74 deg which is too soon ( or it was for me as the oil never got up to temperature ) so I asked them for a 92 deg one ( part No OTSP1SK92 ) which works a treat. It is important for the oil to work at its proper temp and as a RV8 does not really need a cooler unless you are going to do track days this is a mod I highly recommend. HTH

Re: Oil Cooler details

Martin, John,

Thanks for the replies, I took the easy (lazy) option and got GD to send the "right" bits, 20 Mins later and it's all fitted.

Martin, I had the same problem as you, although I got to about 4 laps (clearly I wasn't trying hard enough ).

Cheers

Jim
