LS1 Starter

At the wiring stage and thought I would try a test fire to give me the confidence that all was well.
Well it wasn`t !!! Just a clunk and nothing else.
The engine can be rotated via crank pulley so that should not be an issue.
Confirmed wiring size and connections must be OK and battery was recharged overnight just to make sure.
So decided to strip it out after long deliberation as it must be the worst possible thing to remove with the body on and exhaust in place.
A standard oil pan would have made life easier but the corvette winged version hides everything.
So to a bench test .................
The throw out pinion certainly throws out but stays there.
Should it continue to rotate ????? Any thoughts please.
Trevor

Re: LS1 Starter

Sorry to hear that, Trevor. I had a problem with mine that turned out to be a loose connection onto the starter relay. Your problem sounds a bit different and I imagine you checked for that...

... if you want to swap for a standard oil pan, then let me know!!

Re: LS1 Starter

Just a thought. Have you connected the earth strap from chassis to engin?
As I had the same issue.

Regards

David

Re: LS1 Starter

I have so many earth straps you would not believe !
The final test was done on bench with pos & neg of battery direct to main posts and a pos for solenoid signal.
Just no rotation once the pinion had fired out with a hefty clunk.

Re: LS1 Starter

Robin
Thanks for that kind offer but in this instance I think I will decline.
Just bought a `new` one off e bay for £ 88 . (without a core charge which seems common as only re engineered units seem to be available )
Might have to get the wiring in place whilst waiting.

Re: LS1 Starter

Starter issue resolved thanks to PaulF who has concluded that there is NO need for the earth connection.
Therefore for anyone at a similar stage :-
Battery positive to terminal post at 7-o-clock
and Starter positive signal to small post at 11-o-clock
Earth is taken through case.

Nett result ....... fired and ran first turn and sounds great.
Only a couple of starts at tickover produced 40 psi oil pressure within a few seconds , so pretty chuffed.

Re: LS1 Starter

Congratulations! Was this with the new starter motor or the old one? How did you set up your fuel pressure?

Re: LS1 Starter

Robin
I used the original starter motor - so my efforts didn`t b***er it up.
Fuel pressure set with 60mm gauge plus adaptor and fitted to one of the spare ports on the pressure regulator.
Just a small oil leak to cure from the oil press. & temp manifold block to side of oil pan.
