Red Hot Exhaust

HELP, just got back from a short run and found the headers from the manifold to just outside the bodywork were glowing bright red !!
Car felt a bit lumpy as well on the way back.
Just thinking its probably a timing issue, but just to check, anyone else got any ideas please.
Oil & water temps were OK.
Thanks.:thumb:

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Can only be to do with sparks or mixture.
Easy to check timing and advance with a strobe but you really need a gas analyser to do an accurate mixture. excess heat usually point to a lean mixture, are your secondaries working?

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Andy,

For what its worth I had this on a Jensen Interceptor that I brought back to life and it was the ignition timing, literally moved the dizzy a bit and the manifolds went back to normal almost straight away. Can't remember if I had to advance or retard but it worked straight away.

Cheers

Alastair

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Retarded ignition will certainly make your headers glow. Unless your Dizzy has moved on that journey, I would have thought it would have come to notice before.

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Well BOLL*CKS I still dont know whats wrong, had the man out this morning, he checked all the timing, mixture etc and all seemed ok, thought it might have been fuel as I did put a couple of gallons of Esso unleaded in her albeit on top of 6 gals of BP Ultimate, never been a problem before but you never know,so I put 1/2 bottle of octane booster in the tank and took her for a short spin, litterally 4-5 miles, and guess what, bl88dy things were glowing again when I got back. So now I havnt got a clue, HAS ANYONE ELSE ???????

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Andy,

Has this only just started to happen? Or has it been like it since you've had the car??

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Check timing all of you and fuel pump. Also check components by which the timing is set...damper I think its called. If thats moved, then you'll alwys be setting it up wrong

Re: Red Hot Exhaust

Dave I had the guy over from Bodium this afternoon who did your engine (Tony?)_ and he checked all the timing mixture etc and we couldnt really find an explanation. Since then have spoken to Dave Brookes, cheers mate, Real Steel who build the engine, and Thunder Road Cars, very very helpful.
Think I may have found the problem, its possibly the vacuum advance not working.
Checked it by taking the pipe off the carb and sucking on it and the end in the dizzy didnt move, mech advance is fine rotor arm moves ok. So I.m now suspecting this is the problem, just dont know yet whether its corroded in the dizzy and seized or its the diaphram in the vacuum unit. Hope to be able to check tomorrow.
