| 5 speed manual gearbox Hi all, i'm looking to change the 4-speed 'box i got in my Dax to a 5 speed 'box and need some help/advice on what to go for. The old 'box in the car at the mo is a Ford sideloader and the engine is a mildy tuned ford 302. Have been looking at the T5 but been told maybe not so robust as Getrag (is this out of a jag?) and the other thing is budget - can't afford a new 'box as much as i'd like to so any help on this would be much appreciated! I've seen an advert for a jag xj6 manual 5 speed with bellhousing from a scrapyard up north - any good? Will also change clutch at same time. Cheers Matt |

| Re: 5 speed manual gearbox Series 3 Jag XJ used a 5 speed 'box - very similar to that found on the end of a lot of Rover V8s. Was the same externally, I believe the internals were uprated to take torque of the 4.2 litre Jag straight 6. Not sure what the actual rating figures were tho'. Not a particularly common 'box as not many manual Jag XJs were sold - most were auto.

| Re: 5 speed manual gearbox Wilf: I had a manual 5 speed S3 Jag. Horrid box nothing to recommend it. I heard that the mod they did was to change some plain bearings for rollers mainly to make it quieter. I have also heard rumoured that that Rover 5 speed box is really some ancient Triumph (TR4?) 4 speed modified to take an extra cog. If I was going to the trouble to fit a new box, it would not be one of these. The Toyota 5 speed is much nicer and readily available.

| Re: 5 speed manual gearbox Matt If you are looking at a Getrag box you are probably better off looking at BMW's rather than Jags, Myles D-W is right the jag manuals had a bad reputation. If you are going Getrag the 265 is the one you will want, I'm assured it will take the torque and from everything I know it is pretty reliable. The 265 is fitted on cars right from the early eighties so they have become fairly cheap if you look about. On some later 5 series cars they fitted an alternative box (I think the 262) that was withdrawn after a couple of years, easy way to tell the difference it has an integral bell housing where as the 265 it seperates. Of course there is the dog leg box that was fitted on the later sports models that is superb but the price normally reflects this (one on ebay the other week for £1000). Another thing to consider is the speedo drive, most BMW's have an electronic sensor on the the drivetrain after the box. Early M3 and 535/635csi had a mechanical cable drive. Consider the cost of speedo change / calibration etc. I'm sure someone out there has fitted one of these boxes to a 302. I know AK fit them on the SBC so I'm sure its not impossible. Probably your biggest cost will end up the adapter plates/bell housing. Neil

| Re: 5 speed manual gearbox Thanks for the info on the Getrag option. Other thought is the T5 w/c 'box used on the cerbera's. Been offered one for £525 so far with a guarantee. |
