Hydraulic Lifters

Hi
I have fitted adjustable rockers to my RV8 and I am trying to set the preload.
The problem is that some of the lifters are so solid that the centre piston will not move down and the rocker will start to open the valve and some lifters have only the resistance of the spring under the piston. The lifters are not worn and have only done approx. 10000 miles, do they need replacing ? The engine hasn't been run for several months so shouldn't all lifters have bled down ?
Any help appreciated

roger

Re: Hydraulic Lifters

Depends on the position of the cam and hence the lifter in the lifter bore. If the cam is lifting, then the oil transfer ports to the lifter will be closed - hence it will not bleed down. If the ports are slightly open then the lifter will 'collapse'.

Try turning the engine over by hand very slowly a few times with the pushrods in position.

btw why adjustable rockers AND hydraulic tappets? - you now have two things doing exactly the same job.

Re: Hydraulic Lifters

Hi Russ
Have tried turning engine over by hand and also removing 'solid' lifters and using a pushrod to try squeezing oil out all to no avail. I have fitted adjustable rockers to enable me to set preload properly without having to frig about shimming the rocker posts
Regards
Roger

Re: Hydraulic Lifters

Hi Roger as a thought could you not set up your preload as per Chevy i.e. TDC on 1 rotate pushrod as you adjust the screw until it will just rotate with your fingers. Then give it a 1/2 turn more.
Depending on the pitch of your adjusters this will put it approx 1/3rd of the lifter travel then continue with the rest in sequence.

Re: Hydraulic Lifters

Roger
I have Kenne-Bell roller rockers(Russ said I didnt need them too,but I wanted them)
I had to shim them to get the correct preload and I think its very difficult to do it after the engine has been run,as Russ pointed out the lifters are a bugger to get the oil out of.
