Fuel line (general advise needed)

I have an injected Ford V6Granada Cossie engine, rectangular petrol tank in the boot, 8mm copper pipes running along the chassis rails (cortina viper). The granada V6 engine has a charcoal filter, fuel pump and a whole collection of bits that sit in the fuel tank (not bought the tank yet).

1) Can anyone suggest how to plumb up all the fuel line components (one rubber flexi hose at engine engine with a red marker, one with a black marker).

2) Which pipe is flow, which is return?

3) Does the fuel pipe come out of the bottom of the tank and into the boot space, but if i did this, would i have space to fit charcoal filter, fuel filter and pump at the boot end of the car?

Haynes do not do a manual on this car (in cossie format), and ordinary Granada is a fair bit different.

Cheers

Re: Fuel line (general advise needed)

A fuel filter and pump will be required but you need to know what pressure of fuel delivery you need before getting the pump as they do vary, and in price as well!!!, most filters and pumps are fitted in the boot, generally above one of the wheel arches, out of the way but easily accessed. A fuel pressure gauge at the engine end on the flow pipe is also a good idea so you can check the delivery pressure where it matters most. Unfortunately I cant help with the hose issue but someone here is bound to know and post a thread. Good luck.

Re: Fuel line (general advise needed)

hi
we already have the fuel pump and filter from the donor car, it is more the positioning that is causing us some problems.

Re: Fuel line (general advise needed)

Is it good practice to design the fuel pipes so they run flat / downhill or does the fuel pump push the fuel easily uphill?
Cheers

Are you sure that the charcoal filter sits in the tank?

The return line is the easiest. There should be a fuel regulator on the fuel rail on the engine. Put a return line after this regulator from the fuel rail( flexible rubber from fuel rail connecting to fixed copper pipe on chassis) going back to the return feed in the fuel tank. If you can put the fuel pump into a swirl pot in the tank and position the return feed so that returned fuel drops into the swirl pot so much the better as you wont suffer fuel starvation problems under hard braking or acceleration / cornering.

For the feed , if you can't mount the fuel pump in the tank put it as low as possible, along side a chassis rail under the tank floor is ideal, and mount it horizontally. This will help to ensure it doesnt run dry and burn out.

Fit the filter in the line, and then run copper pipe down to engine and connect to fuel rail inlet using the correctly marked rubber fuel pipe. Use two jubilee clips per joint to be safe.

Some fuel injected cars use a scavenger pump to suck the fumes out of the empty space in the fuel tank and feed them either into the engine or into a charcoal filter. In both cases this is not necessary and can be disconnected, blocking off any feeds into inlet manifolds etc.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers,

Tony

Kev

Also dont forget to flare the copper pipe where it connects to the rubber to help keep it wedged on, and as above double clips to be sure.

I found out the silly way which way mine went.

Thing didn't start when I pressurised the return line!!!!
