Help wanted

Hi

I live in Flint (North Wales), about 15 miles from Chester.

For the last 6 months I've been trying to cure a smoking problem from one of my exhausts.

I'm convinced it's a fuel problem but don't know where the problem is (fuel injection).

I've recently fitted reconditioned heads but the problem is still there.

Is there anyone in this area, with engine experience, willing to come and have a look. I'm only looking for pointers and wouldn't expect any work done.

Happy to pay travel costs and provide plenty of tea.

Cheers

Howard

What type of fuel injection have you got. There are some websites with diagnostic checks to follow. I've just found the link below in my favorites, there are more depending on your injection system

Hi Steve

Changing the heads had no effect and the smoke is black. The engine is a fuel injected Rover Vitesse 3.5.

Cheers

Thanks Steve

I've got the Lucas flapper injection system, I'll do some checks over the weekend.

Cheers

Re: Help wanted

Howard,

When you changed the heads did you have the injectors cleaned? I have found before that if even one injector is slightly blocked it will give you poor atomisation within the cylinder, thus creating poor combustion and smoke.

Hi Russ

No I didn't get the injectors checked but I'm beginning to wish I had now.

I'm going to do a compression test at the weekend to try and eliminate, or point the finger at, the piston rings. Do you know what PSI I should get ?

The heads are recon with new valve seals so they should be OK, which should only leave the fuel system. Do you agree with this approach or can you advise differently ?

Cheers

Howard,

A compression test would be a good idea, this would establish your peak pressures. You should find what your compression rate should be in haynes manual for your engine. One word of caution though, you say your heads are recon. 9 out of 10 times when heads are recon'ed they are skimmed to ensure they have a true and square face, thus slightly increasing you compression ratio. All i would say is that if you have any cylinders with a lower compression that the rest, that cylinder needs further investigation.

The norm reasons for low compression is 1, piston rings gone - if this is the case the engine will be breathing heavy. 2, valves arn't sealing correctly in their seats- but this should not be the case if youv'e just had them recon'd.

If compressions are O.K i would get your injectors cleaned and tested to see if your getting a good spray pattern and atomisation.

I hope this is of help.

Russ

Re: Help wanted

I would certainly clean the injectors.

You could try swappng em over to the opposing banks and see if the problem moves.
