Dial Test Indicators (DTI's)

Im thinking about buying a DTI & magnetic stand to aid the build up of my motor, Ive seen one for not too much (£18 including the stand) which resolves to 0.001" or the more expensive well known makes like Mitutoyo which resolve to 0.0001" for £60 plus.

So is the chepaer one OK for checking the likes of crank end play withon 0.004-0.008 range, seems a simple answer but the max end float is 0.0012" so do I need the 0.0001" unit?!?

Im hoping the cheaper one will be OK, anyone have experience usings DTI's, Ive not used them at all really.

Cheers

Re: Dial Test Indicators (DTI's)

Hi there as with all types of tools they have their limitations so if you have to check to tenths of a thou then you should go for the better quality DTI as you will not be able to guesstimate a tenth
cheers
Paul

Re: Dial Test Indicators (DTI's)

Andy, take a look on e-bay they have some good 2nd hand deals on there. You can probably pick up a used Mitutoyo for the the price of a new Draper.

I bought a new "cheap" one with stand and wasn't really impressed with the quality at all. Did the job though.
