ignition light

Can any one tell me why ignition light flickers on at approx 2000 revs upwards and voltmeter stays at a constant 13v. Fan belt is tight enough. Any ideas would be appreciated

Re: ignition light

At a guess the volt meter is showing the voltage of the whole system, ie including the battery, so even if the engine stops it will still show the battery voltage.

The charge light however is wired in to take 12v from the battery and an input from the alternator. When the engine is off, you get 12v (from the batt) and 0v (from the alternator), so the light comes on. When its running you should get 12v and 12v so no voltage potential so the light stays off.

If your light is coming on, you must have a lower voltage coming from the alternator.

Re: ignition light

Could be a diode/rectifer pack on it's way out. With engine ticking over turn on everything electrical and volt meter should stay at around 13 to 14 volts and you should notice a slight drop in engine note as alternator takes up the load.

Re: ignition light

Hi Adrian
Volt meter shows a constant charge when engine is running and drops down when turned off

Re: ignition light

The volt meter could be wired to ignition live, so no ignition no power to the dial.

As stated, your regulator's probably stuffed.

Re: ignition light

13v at 200rpm sounds a bit low anyway, should be more like 14v.

Check all the connections both from and too the battery, alternator and ignition light.

The ignition light is normally fed from the multi pole connector coming from the alternator.
Check this is also secure.
Otherwise, as stated, sounds like the alternator.

Re: ignition light

Take the alternator to a decent auto electrian and the should be able to test it on a jig for you
