Re: Programmable devices and SVA.

Ooops Forgot!!

Dean

Make the units Plug in, easy to get at and remove, and make two of them in in the unlikely event one dies!!
Most important of all, document it thoroughly both hardware and source code.

Better to spend the time at the design stage and anticipate potential problems.

Thanks for all that. Much apprieciated. Looks like you'll be the one i will be calling.

I am aware of the majority of the issues you have raised.

Got 17 years in heavy electrical environment with major exposure to digital DC drives and process control, so well aware of the impacts of EMC and RFI, especially to darn mobile phones!! One company I worked for had a problem where the machine line speed dipped at the same time each weekday morning. Finally traced to the local police signing off on their radio before popping into the canteen for breakfast. Highlighted the lack of sufficient shielding in the drive suite.

My own everyday run about is said to have approx 20 'computers' all talkin (allegedly) to each other which is all fine until something goes wrong.

I was considering a plug in system as future expansion (of which i have many (and stupid!!)) ideas.
Bulb failure, temp pressures etc as you have highlighted.

I have a long development perriod available as i don't even have a full rolling chassis yet, let alone anything that needs wiring......

Will let you know how i get on, but may be some time.

Cheers all

Dean.

Sounds like you have some time on your hands to think about things then...

For lamp failure monitoring have a look at the U479B at:-

http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/de...?family_id=606

Also ZETEX make the ZXCT1008 at:- http://www.zetex.com/3.0/a4-5.asp

I have used the U479B previously but not the ZXCT1008 yet.....

You may also like to consider Smart FETS for Power switching. have a look at:-

http://www.infineon.com/cgi/ecrm.dll....jsp?oid=13853

I have used hundreds of these devices with no failures to date. I also introduced a friend to these and he manufactures industrial kit and has used thousands of them with no failures.

If you want some additional info or want to discuss things feel free to PM me

Denis

Re: Programmable devices and SVA.

Christ im lost, ive only just surfaced form the drivers footwell after entering saterday morning to trace wires etc. The result all lights, dash and guages work. It was hard enough with everything supplied and your average 99p switches without involving rocket science.

We haven't got to rocket science territory yet.
