ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

Anyone had problems calibrating an ETB speedo with the SD1 sensor (in an LT77 box)?
I set it up on the rolling road and now it seems to have lost its calibration. I'll call ETB tomorrow but I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem. I use a battery isolator so I'm wondering if removing power is resulting in this problem. I've applied for sva so I need to get this fixed pretty quick.

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

I know this isn't much help but i have never had a problem with loss of calibration, i don't have a battery isolator but i have removed the battery many times for other jobs with no ill effects :thumb:

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

My speedo has been disconnected since November last year - when I started a winter overhaul.

After I progressed to the stage of putting the new dash in and wiring it all up the speedo once again came alive with the correct mileage reading. I can only presume yours has an internal electronic fault.

Good luck

Marty

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor - still suffering

Spoke with ETB on Monday. Changed the resistor as suggested, changed the cable to screened and earthed the screen, as suggested. No bl**dy difference
The only thing left to change (apart from the ETB speedo) is the SD1 sensor - I believe they are very reliable. The alternative I suppose is to go with the ETB propshaft wheel and magnetic pickup.

I need to make sure the setup is reliable. Whats your opinion of the ETB pick up system?

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

I run the ETB setup and it is great :thumb: only problem I ever had was a magnet coming off but once glued on with the appropriate stuff works fine and is as accurate as any other system.

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

Thanks for the replies :thumb:
I've decided to buy an ETB pick-up, the type where magnets are fitted to the gearbox o/p flange. Although I cannot test the SD1 sensor it did work as the speedo calibrated. I've had some quality issues with ETB so if I use their eqipment throughout, wired in accordance with their recommendations, and it still does not work reliably, then at least I have a starting point for discussion.

There's no technical help at ETB until next week. The chap on the phone said I should cover the magnets with Araldite. Is this the best method of retaining?

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

To be honest Araldite will work but only if you use the old style stuff that takes forever to set and not the new "Sets in an hour" stuff as the old stuff is considerably stronger. I in the end used sickoflex which worked great :thumb:

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

Martin,
Thanks for that. I've just received the sensor and magnets - I didn't realise the magnets were so small. Did you use screened cable?
I now have my SVA date - 10 May - but the rolling road is booked up until 11 May, what a bu**er. I suppose I shall have to find a quite road and measure out a mile.
I believe it is possible to calibrate the speedo from a calculation using tyre size and diff ratio, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Have you any experience of this?

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

I used the ETB speedo with the little magnets. I told ETB the diff ratio and size of tyres and they told me the correct callibration figure to use. The calibration worked perfectly and was spot on all the way up. But make sure you place the magnet pickup at the specifified gap from the magnets and both magnets are aligned perfectly with it. I used the normal long setting time Araldite and have had no problems (yet!).

Good luck

Re: ETB Speedo and SD1 sensor

Nick,
Thanks for your message. That gives me some confidence that the system will work without having to road calibrate it. I'll call ETB with the tyre and diff info and hopefully that will sort it. :thumb:
