Dish washer powder and front hubs...

Does anyone know if boiling my front hubs in dishwasher powder (and water) will do any harm? I need to get all the remaining grease and shot out following blasting or my new bearings will last about 100 yards!

I had thought about using a steam cleaner but I cant find one locally thats cheap enough and hiring one is a joke!

Many Thanks

Hi. Have you thought about using the dishwasher when the boss is not at home? Cheaper

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

Andy, do you not know anyone with a jet wash?

Give them a good scrub with Comma or Gunk, one of the de-greasers, and then simply jet wash it off!

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

I did that process before they went for blasting as Ive got a pressure washer, it didnt work totally then! (maybe I didnt clean well enough!). If the dishwasher powder wont be any good I can use normal degreaser, but I think heat is the answer to clear out everything from the hubs. I cant see that my dishwasher powder will cause a problem as its OK for my dishes and it wont knacker my glasses!! As long as it doesent react with the steel of the hubs.

Cheers

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

hi andy
can't you get down to your local garage/mot station and ask to use their engine cleaning tank??or better still engine machine shop -they'll have the best kit for sure ,wouldn't cost much surely ,and better still could earn extra brownie points which could come in handy in the future if you want more/new shiny bits....! (it pays to plan ahead..)

Update on Dish washer powder and front hubs...

Update.... not tried the hubs yet but I took one of the old front lower ball joint caps fresh from the mucky spares box still full of grease and covered in oil. Boiled it up on the hob in an old pot for 5 minutes in mix no.1 of Tescos best dishwasher powder and then 5 minutes in a strong mix of sugar soap (chosen as its not caustic). After rinsing and cooling it was clear that all the grease and oil had gone with no ill effects to the metal. It looked very clean though.

After the last boil I should then use the marine clean which preps ready for the POR15, that works best hot as well so Ill boil that up too.

So thats it, test over Ill do the hubs next! Well chuffed!

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

Didn't your mum warn you about mixing cleaning products! Keep the extractor on full and wear protection....

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

Silent Partner.. Thanks for your concern but I didnt actually mix anything together, each product was used separately with the kitchen extractor running full tilt, even so I kept out of the way!

One of those Salter young chemist kits taught me about the dangers of mixing things together, I put everything in the kit in the test tube at once, stripped the varnish off mums best table!! I might have gotten away with it if I wasnt 25 a the time:thumb:

Cheers

Re: Dish washer powder and front hubs...

i cleaned my engine in hot soapy water after giving it a going over with gunk the hot water turns to steam and leaves the engine nice and dry well there are a few little spots left but it is nothing wd-40 wont shift so i think that should be fine for your front hubs i even gleaned my diff the same way and it works fine just make sure you dry it off when you are done
