Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Nice picture Ak Rich.

There are substantial differences with the DAX (steering point at the front).
I see that you have the 4 shims and that you bolts length are OK.
I will change it today and see what happens.

I thought that 3 shims was the maximum allowed.

My caster is Positive as you can see from the picture, is that OK?
I can't found at DAX any reference to positive or negative CASTER

Regards,
Cobra289

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Thats how mine is Rich :thumb: I think I only had to change the arms side to side because the guy I bought the kit from (part built) had fitted them the wrong way round

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

According to the AK manual
"3 to 4 shims will need to be inserted...to achieve a castor angle of 51/2 to 6 degrees"
Dax may set up differant however

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

The Jag was originally fitted with 4 shims. In whatever combination needed front or rear to achieve the correct castor angle. using less than 4 will put undue strain on the top inner bushes which will lead to premature wear

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Many thanks Purple AK.
That is what I want to hear. 4 shims are OK
I was thinking that 3 shims was the Jaguar setup and I was afraid about the top bushes to.
I have put nylon bushes from Merlin long time ago and was thinking that perhaps the dimension has been changed from rubber to nylon.
And now I go to the Cobra to change the caster!!!! 15 min. drive to get there. Buh!!!!!!
Thanks,
Cobra289

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Surprise, surprise, what I found?

Jaguar goat two different caster shims thickness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One year ago I order two set of shims from Jaguar and did install with out measuring the thickness.

Today I was looking for the old shims and found that there is a big difference.
New one is 1 mm old one is 1.64 mm

3x old will make = 4.92 mm
3x new will make = 3 mm
4x old will make = 6.56 mm
My new setup is 2 old + 2 old = 5.28 mm (See picture)

My setup is changed from 3 mm to 5.28 mm and that make a lot of difference.
It is not 100% but it has improved a lot in the driving behavior.

AK Rich I have scaled your picture and according to me you have 6.6 mm that means that you have the old type shims.

Perhaps you are willing to check for me? Thanks in advance.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

I am using the original shims from my donor, just had a measure and I would say it's about 6.6mm total, but remember we have different type arms, with may need shimming differently.
Do you have a castor gauge?

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Many thanks. The difference will be the angle but not the shim and I am happy with that, because DAX advise to use 3 shims, it doesn’t say how thick!!! You understand!
Even the angle is not mention at the book.

I don't have a castor gauge but this week I will bring the car to the professional and see the angle that I get now.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

If you want to check yourself here is a gauge with instructions, :thumb:

Print gauge onto A4 paper and then stick to some stiff card.
Trim edges parallel to the vertical middle line

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

That is nice from you AK Rich.
I will make it and see the results, if I can take a point, because the calipers are there.
I will try to put this template in AutoCAD.
Best regards,
