More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

I have put on my DAX, standard frame, the 3 shims as mention on the manual.
I have check for the right position with the knuckle top arms.
But after a turn, the steering wheel doesnt come back easy, I need to help a little.

I have a caster angle of 2 on one wheel and 230 at the other.

My question are:
Can I put and extra shim?
I have heard that 5 will be the best, is that right?

Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Cobra289

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Hi 289.
2 - 2.5 degrees castor dosn't sound enough. On the AK which is also Jag based they recommend 6 degrees. To achieve this amount I had to move the top wishbones from side to side on the car so that the arms with the greatest offset were at the rear, Then fit 4 castor shims at the front. (There should always be 4 shims per side whatever combination you end up with)

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Be interested to see what other people think on this. I've got the same problem, pointed out by my friendly SVA man.

Jag manual says 2.25 +/- .25 degrees castor.

I've measured mine (correctly i think?) and with all 4 shims at the back i've still got a problem self centreing.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Hang on a minute, feeling down the back of my neck like i've made an **** of myself (again)

Well at least it wasn't with a major cutting tool. (You know who you area, he he)

Mine's on the minimum self centreing setting isn't it? I need to move the shims to the front to move the axis that the front wheel rotates around so it points to the ground in front of where the wheel touches the ground.

(ie the hub angles top-backwards, bottom forwards)

D'oh

Shims at the Front of Back?.
According to DAX the 3 shims should be mounted at the front if you have the cranked upper wishbone.
See my picture, the right side of the picture is the front of the car.
See the other picture and check the electronick measuraments.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

I thought when I read the Dax manual and looked at the castor set up it says to put the shims towards the rear of the car if it has the straight arms and at the front if it has the bent ones.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Erm. I have the other type of top arm In your application it would decrease the castor angle. Maybe DB can throw some light on it

Purple AK.
Do you mean that with the cranked uper wishbone (picture), if I add an other shim will decrease the angle?
In that case is the problem easy to solve.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

No Sorry.

I would say that my arms are cranked, because one has more angle of crank than the other. Maybe I'm wrong and they are what is refered to as straight I'll whip a wheel off and post a picture tomorrow As to your problem, Try adding another shim at the front with the others and see how it feels.

Re: More than 3 Caster shims, is that OK?

Already got a wheel off so i thought I'd take a picy

If 289's are the cranked type then mine will be the straight ones?
but like Chris's one arm has more deflection than the other.

I have 4 spacers at the front side, but I did have to transpose the near and off sides to get the required caster
