Brake pipe

Does anyone know if the copper brake pipe has to have markings on it, or is it assumed that if it is copper, then it is suitable?
Does the same apply to copper fuel lines?
Cheers

Kevin do not use copper brake pipes, they are hard and brittel. Use the type with nickle in which are soft and flexible, That apply's to petrol as well, I think they are generally know as bungie tubing any decent Auto Factor will supply you with this type Osgood

Re: Brake pipe

Kevin

I sell Copper Brake pipe, the very pipe that Dax supply. In fact the very pipe that's fitted to 1000 Kits, Refurbs, Rollers, Astons and the like per month. The company I sell to is Automec Ltd in Buckingham (http://www.automec.co.uk). Ray Smith will sell you 90/10 CuNi, but he'll tell you that for ductility, you should use Fully Annealed C106 Copper. It does eventually work harden and become brittle as does 90/10, but is easily annealed back by heating to Cherry Red with a blow torch and quenching in water. If you speak to Ray, tell him that Dave of Cole Tubes recommended him.

My apologies to all insulted by the open advertising.

Re: Brake pipe

Hi Kevin

Having worked with both bundy and copper pipe not only on my car but also on machines at work. I would deffinatly use copper as it is earier to work with without putting kinks into it, it will swage much better with out splitting.:thumb:

Also as Ragley said if the pipe you have is getting a little stiff one blow torch and a bucket of water and it is back to being soft as putty.

Hang on a mo

Just had this discussion at work.
To anneal copper shouldn't you let it cool in sand and not quench?
Queching would make it brittle wouldn't it??

Re: Brake pipe

'However, it is possible to cool copper fast enough to make it into a brittle material. This normally involves cooling rates of greater than 10 million degrees C per second which can only be obtained by spraying a very thin film on to a very cold surface (this equipment is very expensive).'

I think the bucket is probably ok!!
