What Oil for a T5 Gearbox

Hi Guys,

I'm fitting a B&W T5 gearbox from a GM Camaro, I don't know how old the box is but it's just been rebuilt, can anybody tell me what is the correct oil to use.

Thanks a lot.

Kelvin

Re: What Oil for a T5 Gearbox

ATF is used in the world class version of the T5s but the earlier version non world class uses 75/90 gear oil.
i believe it is something to do with the bearings and lubrication.

Re: What Oil for a T5 Gearbox

Hi Purple AK,

That's my problem, there was no ID tags on the box so ID-ing it is hard, I'm sure it's not a WC gearbox & as I said it's been rebuilt, the tail section of the box was set at a 30deg angle so that the gearstick pointed towards the left for yank driver but I've fitted a Cossie T5 tail section which gives me a level gearbox mount, but I would like to make sure I use the correct oil in it.

Thanks to all who offered their advice.

Kelvin

AT the right side of the box (mid section) you will see a round casting form that indicates the year (84 or others) you can see that also at the top cover.
At the left side close to the backup switch you can read some casting number something like 13-52-065. OK the last two figures are not the correct tag of your gearbox but are close to it, so your box can be a 13-52-062.
Try at the above mentioned site this combination and you should find the year and application.
One thing is for shore:
NWC use 75W90 and WC use ATF
it is because the changes that B&W made to the synchromesh. The new ones are sintered metal instead of Bronze.

Re: What Oil for a T5 Gearbox

Slightly off point but is there a difference between ATF Dexron II and ATF Dexron III. In my hurry to fill the box before the body went on I got some ATF Dexron II and filled it - it was only later that I realised that the tag on the box said III and not II. Does this matter in the T56 or are Tremec trying to do the oil companies a favour - i'm guessing III is more expensive than II as is generally the way with these things!!!
