Is Black just Black ?

This might bea stupid question, but I want to paint my Cob just plain and simple black with a good high gloss finish. But is black just black ?

You see other colours like midnight black etc. and yes I know you can have a metallic fleck through it but I don't want any of that I just want a good plain black with a nice shine

Hi,
unfortunatly there are (as with all colours) different shades of black dependent upon what pigments etc are used.
Best way is to go to a paint supplier and look through the colour cards.
The only black that I can think of that springs to mind is Ford Panther Black.(most commonly seen on Ford Focus)

Just had my GD painted Ford Panther Black, colour is always a personal choice but I like the way the fine gold flake 'lifts' the colour in the sun (mine was the first Panther Black cobra the paintshop had done & they preferred the colour over other blacks).

I got the idea from a guy at work who's into custom bikes & trikes and the paintshop he uses recommended this as their first choice metallic black.

Anyway I'm really happy with the way it looks

black is not just black! there are hundreds...
a good solid black is just plain and simple taxi black and the best way for this to be painted is for the car to be painted and then laquered and to make it really shine you have it flatted and re-laquered!!

With respect to your Black question.
Car manufactures use to have a nice name for the paints but there is a norm that goat a constant replication of the color, it is the RAL and I think that the RAL black is the most black color that you can get.

hi Karel,
don't know if you get kit-car magazine over there, but if you do my garage is in there at the moment as we are giving awaya free repaint in a fantastic competition and also in next month's issue Nigel Dean came to visit us and we are a feature in the mag!! shouldbe good reading.
i am a kit perfectionist and know exactly what people want from a repaint!

Hi Colin,

Definitely I will check tomorrow for the Kit-Car magazine.
If the questions are International oriented I have a change. You talk about Nigel Dean I don’t know who he is but I suppose one the UK VIP.

My DAX Cobra was painted original in white at 86 and 2 years ago was re-painted in blue after stay several weeks in the sun it has started to produce some nasty ripples at every joint with the inner panels I think that is because the with paint repels more easy the sun radiation and now with the bleu it take all the energy.
That has originated a difference in dilatation and I think that this was for the first time.
All most 20 years and the GRP is still working.

Do you also level all the edges of the boot, trunk and doors in the standard package?

Thats a nice setup there !!! I'm assuming there is lots of prep work too before even thinking about shooting any paint. Any thoughts on where to start ??

hi lazyboy,
here's a very shortened version of events before your car should see it's final coat!
your car needs to be completely built, all holes in their rightfull places so you don't have to worry about drilling and killing anything!
strip it all down again, leaving the panels on.. then starts the back braking stuff!! all the shut lanes have to be made good ( a long and arduous process) next it's get rid of any flash lines, body ripples, and misshapes.. then put shapes in that should be there, when your happy with all that remove the panels, make good all the inside edges and on with the first coat of primer, rub it all down and do it again!!
when your 100% sure there are no pinholes or anything on the car that shouldn't be there.... paint it!!....... then flat it down and maybe depending on the finish.... do it again!
then polish it to within an inch of it's life, bolt it back together and listen to everyone going Ooooh! Ahhhh! and grin alot!
there we go easy!
