Front Grille mesh

Are there any specific requirements for the front radiator aluminium mesh regarding the SVA?
I have just spent an embarrassing time in one of those 'chav shops', getting some small holed ali sheeting.
The edges aren't exactly radiused, more like small square sectioned bars crissed crossed. the holes end up being diamond shaped not round and are approx 4mm across.

Re: Front Grille mesh

you can get the mesh from diy centres like focus for cheap,i did and sprayed it black to match my stripes, however you may not want to bother becouse this does inhibit the flow of air to the radiator, better off without them in my hmble opinion.

Re: Front Grille mesh

Unfortunately Section 13 of SVA manual (Exterior Projections) states that grills are covered by the regs:

gaps of 25-40mm need a radius of curvature not less than 1mm on any external surface

gaps of 10-25mm need a radius of curvature not less than 0.5mm on any external surface

gaps of not more than 10mm need a "blunted edge".

However I do not recall the Examiner at Gillingham checking the grill but he was very much trying to help me to pass.

Unfortunately you do need some sort of obstruction in your nose to prevent the tester getting inside the nosecone and being able to contact any sharp edges lurking in there. You might want to consider putting any old mesh in there for the test and then removing it and doing what you like afterwards.

Oops! I mean the mesh used is bound to fall out of its own accord after the SVA :-}

Re: Front Grille mesh

You could always do what i did, which is forget the grill and fix a 'number plate' bar or two across the opening. Nice rounded items, 20mm or so diameter, stops the tester shoving his orb in your orrifice.

Re: Front Grille mesh

I have now got the mesh semi fitted. I don't think it looks too bad. If it stops a stone smashing thro the rad, then it can't be all bad .
Thanks for your help. Just 3,000,000 other jobs to do now.

Re: Front Grille mesh

Hi Mike
We would have liked to have come, but this month has taken far too much time / money from both of us. We are having mum and dad from somerset in donny over august, so that is even more expense. Sorry to you all, especially you Anthony.
We paid close to 30 quid for 2 sheets from chav heaven for grille. looks like we will narly a whole sheet left over tho .
We could adapt our george forman grill to drip even more fat out with the remanants of the mesh.
Anyone got any other ideas for left over mesh? eg one use bar be que?
Cheers

Re: Front Grille mesh

Put it on ebay. I'm sure some chav or other will take it off your hands!
