Paint block before or after machine work??

Heres my next question now that my CR is sorted out!:thumb:

Whats the opinions on following this order:

1)Get block chemically cleaned and acid dipped.
2)Get block back and paint block with POR15.
3)Get block decked and bored.

as opposed to order 1, 3, 2.

Im thinking 1,2,3 because this means you dont have to protect the new machined surfaces from all that water used during the POR15 process and if you get any paint on the deck surfaces its going to get milled off and wont effect gasket seal.

What do you guys think, is 1,2,3 a stupid idea?

Many thanks.

Re: Paint block before or after machine work??

Hi Andy,

1,2,3 is ok as long as your paint process can withstand pressure washing as you will need to thoroughly clean the block once it comes back from the machining workshop.

Personally I would avoid getting paint on machined gasket/mating surfaces if possible, even if they are being machined later. especially areas like the main cap seats for example.

Best way to do this is with a pressure washer and some long brushes to make sure all the oil gallerys are clear of debris. After washing use compressed air to dry everything out.

It might be prudent to get you machine shop to install the new cam bearings if required, unless you have tool to do this.

Regards
Chris

PS If is being decked don't forget to get new cylinder head dowels installed as well.

Re: Paint block before or after machine work??

Worry less about the coluor and more about protecting the bores etc. By all means acid wash your block etc but the one point is after you have skimmed etc you need to thoroughly clean the engine including galleries etc etc. Get a set of engine brushes and take the engine to a garage that has a pressure washer or preferably steam cleaner and use some gunk or similar on the engine

If the cleaning process takes less than 30 to 40 mins you have not done it properly. The test is to take some white tissue and wipe the bores. If there is any grey colour keep going.

Why do I say this when the question is about painting block - well its because as soon as the engine is clean you need to blather the bores and mating surfaces with WD40 and stick the engine in a bin bag untill you get it home to avoid the rust.

I think you will find that a decent engine enamel can be used once the engine is assembled an they come in a variety of colours and it will ptobably be easier for you this way.

Mike
