Rear wheel bearings.

Whilst waiting for my body shell to arrive I have been going down my list of final jobs on the chassis. The Jag rear wheel bearings seemed to have a lot of play in them so out with the DTI and both sides are at 18 thou?
I have reduced the brass spacer by 14 thou but the same play is still there????
It is not at the diff end as I have checked that out and it doesn't look to be coming from the UJ's? I can see the movement between the alloy hub carrier and the splined part of the half shaft.
Any ideas? The play is at the TDC and BDC of the wheel and none at the sides.
Is it possible that the bearing races have not been pressed in to the correct depth on assembly?

Confused So gladl I put low strength Loctite on the splined shafts as plenty of persuasion was still needed in the seperation process:thumb:

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

Are you sure the play is in the wheel bearing? If it's only up and down and not side to side I would suspect the bottom wishbone pin bearings.

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

also....these suspensions will have some play if its only up down the weight of the car squashing down takes up this ...
my vettes are much worse than this ..but are considered normal..
there's no play in the 'bearings at all just plunging in/out of the diff.
if in doubt you realy need someone else doing the wiggling about and with you watching underneath(no not a 'swingers party trick'!)

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

rear hub bearings are 0.002 to 0.006 in,different size spacers are available to acheive this

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

Make sure the drive shaft nut is to torque. If it's correct, with the loctite you should need a serious puller to get it off again. Hands won't do it (and hammer use is dumb).

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

The shafts were torqued to the correct figure. During the trial fitment I have omitted the loctite and opted for grease instead. I will clean and re-apply loctite once I have found and removed the play.

I'll spend a bit of time this evening trying to pin-point where the play is coming from?

Cheers,

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

hi lee
when you degrease them do it at least a couple of times ,best 3 times to be sure ....petrol /parrafin is ok 1st ,then thinners, lastly brake cleaner aerosol is ok(leaves no residues..)or you could use a loctite cleaner if you were thinking that far ahead...?

Re: Rear wheel bearings.

I have noticed that at full droop the Jag suspension will allow a little end float in the universal joints.
Try it ar ride height to see if the play disappears.
