Brighter rear lamps

Anyone had any experience fitting brighter rear stop/tail lamps in the Lucas 488 fitting?

A guy called Paul Goff (01494 868 21 is advertising them with a 5 watt tail lamp (same as standard) but with a 35 watt stop lamp (14 watts brighter than standard) and which sounds like a good idea to me given that our rear lamps, (at least in 488 style) aren't very bright in the first place.

Would any mods to wiring be needed with the brigher stop lamp?

Re: Brighter rear lamps

Hi Nigel,

I have found that the Lucas 488 lamps are difficult to see for the other drivers.
I did try with LED’s lamps but that was a very difficult task, cutting, riveting etc. and at the end there was not a big improvement due to the low location of the lamps.
At the end I did decided to buy the Lucas L691 stop/tail lamp in combination with the indicators L692.
It is just fit at a DAX 3 mm space in between.
But it was worth of it, now I have plenty of lamination.
How it looks you can see at my Gallery (big picture)

I hope that this help!

Hi Nigel,
Did you fit any type of relector to the back of the bulbs? If you fabricate a back box out of sheet aluminium or anything else and line it with a reflective lining ie. silver foil, it should brighten things up.
Regards,
Clive.

Hi Clive

There is not so much space to get reflection here with these lamps. The bulb is dip in the bulb holder, only a small part of the top is above the flange. But it is worth to try with some aluminum foil first.

Re: Brighter rear lamps

Hi Nigel,
Just in case that you need it for the L691 and L692 here is a drawing of the setup.
I have used the big holes of the existing old lamps plus was need to add the horizontal 5 mm holes.

How is the life going on in Kobe?
I have work several time with an extruder manufactory “Kobelco” nice guy’s.

Re: Brighter rear lamps

For the rectangular type original tail-light, Gerry sells a simple aluminium reflector box which works very well.

Re: Brighter rear lamps

Thanks guys. I took a look in Laban's book on Cobras last night and I can see that the later original cars in fact used the L691/2 type rear lights and which look fine on the car - maybe put conversion to these on teh winter list - thanks for the sketch with dimensions by the way.
I may just also try the brighter bulbs at least for now.

Re: Brighter rear lamps

I started out with the L488 lamps at the rear of our Dax and was concerned about the brightness of the lights.
The L691 lamps were a simple swap and appear to be much clearer to following road users.

Re: Brighter rear lamps

Terry I can see my indicator signal lamp on the dash fine - in fact all my dash lights are contained within the Smiths speedo and rev counter as jewels.
