Glueing rubber to rubber...

I thought about finishing the ends of the door seals by gluing a small patch of rubber onto the end, but not sure which glue would be best. I've got the following to hand:

1) Loctite superglue
2) Araldite
3) JB Weld
4) Evostik
5) No More Nails

I think the last option can be safely discarded...

...failing that, how have other people finished the ends?

Re: Glueing rubber to rubber...

Loctite Super glue is not waterproof, it is water resistant. If you want decent super glue try a good model shop, one which specialises in radio controlled models. They will normally carry various types, different strengths etc. If it is butyl rubber then the solution from a puncture repair outfit would be another option, however use it sparingly and apply to both surfaces and wait 'till it almost dry before bringing the pieces together. If you have any spare/scraps try different methods first.

Re: Glueing rubber to rubber...

Any photos, Craig? I've experimented with some oversize bits of rubber sheet (pond liner cutoff if you're interested) and large diameter heatshrink. Seems to work OK on the test piece, but I think backing it with glue first would be sensible

Re: Glueing rubber to rubber...

If you go to Wilkos, or Tescos, or Halfords and buy a dirt cheap pushbike puncture repair kit, you'll get a tube of rubber solution, easily the best for joing two bits of natural or nitrile rubber (no good for silicone though).
If its good enough for punctures its got to be good enought for door seals?

P.S-Dont forget to rub the finished job with the chalk to stop it sticking to other bits of rubber/the car/your clothes/your hair etc!!

Re: Glueing rubber to rubber...

I dive and this is what I would do. Go visit a dive gear repair shop. Ask them the favor of gluing your small rubber pieces together. If they use the same stuff as used to glue rubber boots to dry suits then there will be no way for it to come off (not in one piece anyway). The guys working on dive suits really know how to glue rubber and a lot of other materials too. They also carry a whole battery of different products for different materials (some that is so environmentally dangerous that there is no way you could buy them on the street, and that is usually the really good stuff, funny isn’t it, seems like it has to be really bad to be really strong...)...

Re: Glueing rubber to rubber...

Use a small blob black silicone and smooth it over with a wet thumb, this way it will look the same and retain the same flexibility.
Super glue sets too hard and all the rest will look unsightly if you are not an expert with the stuff
