Nuts bolts and paint

As I strip and refurb more and more of the Jag parts, cleaning them as I go with a bench wire wheel, I am making a longer and longer list of nuts and bolts needed. What do I buy and who from if I want a bulk lot of various sizes and washers ? I have seen metric and imperial UNC and UNF and then various types of steel. Can anyone suggest a good supplier and a guide as what to buy ?

Secondly my gleaming parts(whell almost) what do I spray them with Etch primer ? again what and where to get it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

Ward Engineering - http://www.ward-engineering.co.uk/ or John Gordon Jag Spares - http://www.john-gordon.co.uk/

Wards tend to be cheaper on a lot of things like nuts and bolts as they don't charge VAT. Ward's will also recon things like calipers (£265 per full set) as well and rear hubs (£160 per pair). They'll do the whole front and rear setup if you wish.

John Gordon's tend to have things in stock when Ward's are out of stock.

I would make a list of your full requirements and get it all in one go to save on multiple shipping charges (this mounts up).

Go on the above websites - give them a call and get the exploded Jag diagrams emailed to you - VERY helpfull indeed.

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

Thanks
Wards have a big order in from me at present, I woundered if there was a wholesale supplier of nuts and bolts as an alternative.

What did you paint your front wishbones etc with ?

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

Steves stainless in Redditch is Cheaper than chips Ive bought quite a lot from him at bike jumbles, and he can get really oddball stuff too (eg 9/16" by 20tpi cycle thread, well difficult) He does big size stuff, as well as small, stainless self tappers, r clips, split pins, grease nipples etc Ive bought all sorts from him, metric metric fine unc unf bsf bsw ba cycle gas bsp bspt npt etc (OK I am a masochist when it comes to rebuilding stuff!!)
Nice guy, very poor taste in hats!!!
Try him on 01527 831451 or "stevestainless2@aol.com"
He does bulk bags too.
Nothing to do with me; just used him and pleased.
Dont think he has a www yet
Steve
One caveat; do be careful when (if) buying stainless for structural items; but you knew that!

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

oh, if you live near Nottingham, Anchor supplies (close to Notts County ground in the cattle market) sells ex wd stainless fasteners by the kg mixed (£5 a kg) ace value if you dont mind sorting through it. Great value especially for self tappers and fiddly stuff.

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

A point to remember when you buy shiny new bolts is that stainless doesn't have the same tensile strength as steel so should not be used on the suspension and other critically stressed parts. For the UNF or UNC parts there is usually a letter on the head. From Memory:-

R = 45 Ton Tensile
S = 50 Ton Tensile
T = 55 or 60 Ton Tensile ?

Most Metric High Tensile stuff is marked 8.8

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the UNF markings

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

Not sure what the all the technical markings are on bolts but after spending many hours on web sites and on the phone I came to the conclusion that it is almost impossible to work out what you have got and then buy something of the same strenght and properties from elsewhere. Just bought Jag bits in the end.

There is a full list of bits that we bought for the Jag on our website. (for a Dax de Dion)

Re: Nuts bolts and paint

Regarding the paint,yes by all means use etch(you can buy it in aerosols from body shop suppliers).A better alternative is Joseph Masons Rapid Primer,we use this to undercoat bare metal sandblasted lorry chassis and wheels.It costs around £30(trade)a gallon comes in loads of colours and also brushes fine.After doing all your running gear inc your f&r axles you will have loads left.This can be used on painted surfaces as well
